Serra Nevada A-29 Super Tucano: Light Attack Aircraft Officially Inducted into Nigerian Air Force

The U.S. Department of Defense has delivered the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft to the Nigerian Ministry of Defense, headed by Defense Minister Bashir Salihi Magashi, on August 31. This development marks a significant step forward in enhancing the capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force, as well as strengthening cooperation between Nigerian and U.S. troops. The A-29 Super Tucano is expected to play a vital role in improving Nigeria’s ability to combat terrorism and other security challenges.

The A-29 is a versatile aircraft known for its precision targeting, intelligence, reconnaissance, and close air support capabilities. It can effectively contribute to enhancing Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts, particularly against extremist organizations like Boko Haram. This joint project also supports the broader goals of cooperation between the Nigerian and U.S. armed forces.

A total of 64 pilots and maintainers from the Nigerian Air Force were trained in the United States, under the guidance of the U.S. Air Force’s 81st Fighter Squadron at Moody Air Base in Georgia. The training encompasses a wide range of aspects, including aircraft maintenance and technical support, munitions, and various operational procedures.

The A-29 Super Tucano, also known as ALX or Embraer EMB 314, is a Brazilian turboprop light attack aircraft designed and built by Embraer. It boasts a wide array of features, such as precision-guided munitions, reconnaissance equipment, and low-cost operational adaptability, making it a valuable addition to Nigeria’s military arsenal. In addition to the aircraft, the United States Army Corps of Engineers has invested $36.1 million in infrastructure support at the Kainji Air Base, which includes building facilities and security enhancements.

This development is part of a broader effort to enhance Nigeria’s military capacity and to support counterterrorism and counterinsurgency efforts in the region. The A-29 Super Tucano represents the latest milestone in significant engagements between the U.S. African Command and its counterparts, further solidifying the commitment to ensuring regional security and stability.

The A-29 Super Tucano initiative not only provides Nigeria with a formidable aircraft but also strengthens the collaboration and partnership between the two nations, emphasizing the commitment to achieving shared goals and safeguarding the region from threats posed by extremist organizations.
