Federal agents have quietly been running a high-stakes operation in Southern California, and the results are staggering. According to officials, a new initiative called “Operation Guardian Angel” has already pulled 362 previously deported criminal illegal migrants off the streetsāincluding a child molester, a rapist, and an accused killer.
The mission uses federal law to bypass California’s controversial “sanctuary state” rules. Those rules had prevented local police from cooperating with immigration agents, even when they wanted to. Now, federal prosecutors are writing warrants in real time to force jails to hand over dangerous individuals before they can be released back into the community.
During a recent sweep, agents rushed from an ICE field office in downtown Los Angeles to the infamous Twin Towers jail. There, they took custody of seven men who had been arrested for crimes including domestic battery, reckless driving causing injury, and illegal firearms possession. All had been previously deported for illegal entry, making them eligible for federal felony charges.
One of those arrested, Lauro Alberto Rivas, had a record that included weapons offenses, grand theft, and drunk driving. He told reporters he was ready to go back to Mexico. “I regret what I did.
I understand I make mistakes,” he said. “I want to see my family.”
But not everyone was eager to leave. Daniel Garcia, arrested on a domestic battery charge, said he paid $10,000 to a smuggler to cross the border. He claimed he owed money to š¹ššš cartels in his hometown and was terrified to return.
“The cartels take everything,” he said. “All my life is here now.”
Another detainee, Raul Aranda Gutierrez, was picked up after a car wreck that injured two women. He was charged with reckless driving. Despite a history of drunk driving and violating a protection order, he said he would try to sneak back into the U.
S. if deported.
Federal authorities also highlighted several other cases tied to the operation. Jaime RodrĆguez Ladesma, 70, was convicted in 2023 of lewd acts with a child under 14, deported, and then returned illegally. HĆ©ctor Bueno-Moreno, 55, had a 1995 rape conviction in Kern County and was deported twice before being caught again.
JosĆ© Cristian Saravia-SĆ”nchez, 31, is accused of shooting and killing a man who tried to stop him from stealing a catalytic converter in 2025. According to court documents, California’s sanctuary laws had previously prevented local police from holding him on an immigration detainer.
The operation covers six Southern California counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura. LA’s top federal prosecutor, Bill Essayli, said the goal is simple: “The purpose of Operation Guardian Angel is to neutralize these sanctuary state policies.”
Thomas Giles, director of ICE enforcement in Los Angeles, added that state politicians are “forcing local law enforcement agencies to release criminal illegal aliens back into our communities.” He promised the federal government will not back down. “We are not going away,” he said.
With hundreds already caught and more operations planned, the question remains: how far will this federal push go in a state that has long resisted immigration enforcement?
