The family of a British woman who tragically lost her life thousands of miles from home is remembering her as the ‘gentlest soul’ they ever knew. Sonia Exelby, 32, traveled from Portsmouth to Florida in October last year, but never made her scheduled flight back.
Her body was discovered in a wooded area in Marion County on October 17. Authorities have since charged 53-year-old Dwain Hall of Ocala with first-degree murder and kidnapping, with a trial expected in November.
In a heartfelt tribute, Sonia’s family described her as a truly beautiful person inside and out. They noted she was vegan because she couldn’t bear the thought of any animal suffering, and that she played piano effortlessly with an angelic voice.
She was the youngest of six children, softly spoken, and known for giving the warmest hugs. Her loved ones said she brought calmness and light to every room, and that they will carry her kindness forever.
According to investigators, evidence suggests Sonia had traveled to the United States with the intention of meeting individuals online who would allegedly be willing to ππΎππ her violently. Computer records reportedly showed she was suicidal and seeking to be sexually abused, tortured, and murdered.
Her partner Steve Hunt had previously posted an emotional plea, saying she had put herself in an extremely vulnerable situation. A shovel found at Hall’s home reportedly contained soil matching the burial site, and Sonia’s blood was found on the handle.
An autopsy later revealed she had been stabbed four times. Hampshire police continue to support the US investigation while providing assistance to her grieving family.
