In a heart-stopping moment captured on video, a courageous Texas police officer sprang into action to rescue a driver from a burning car on the highway. The dramatic incident unfolded on June 7 in Southlake, Texas, when the driver’s Nissan Altima suddenly erupted in flames while traveling down Highway 114.
The Southlake Police Department released nail-biting footage showing the vehicle engulfed in thick smoke as it pulled over to the side of the busy road. Officer Joshua Swisher, who was handling a separate traffic stop at the time, quickly responded to the alarming scene after being alerted by his superiors.
Dashcam and bodycam footage reveals the urgency of the situation as Officer Swisher raced towards the smoke-filled car. “I could not even see inside the vehicle,” he recounted to Fox 4. “The only thing I saw was hands, and it was the driver trying to get his door open from the inside.”
As dark smoke poured from the car, visibility diminished, and the driver found himself trapped. Swisher attempted to open the door, but the handle broke off, leaving the driver in a precarious situation. Thinking quickly, the officer instructed the man to escape through the window.
Using a window breaker, he shattered the glass and pulled the driver to safety just moments before flames erupted from the vehicle.
Remarkably, the driver emerged unscathed, while Officer Swisher reported some singed arm hair from the intense heat. In recognition of his bravery, Swisher received the Southlake Police Department’s Meritorious Conduct Award, the second-highest honor given by the department.
Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Swisher humbly stated, “I think I speak for every Southlake officer when I say that if anybody had been put in that same situation, same circumstances, any other officer would have done the same thing.”
