Fans have been given their first glimpse of Angelina Jolie in all her menacing Maleficent glory in a newly-released trailer for the upcoming Disney film, which is set to hit cinemas on May 30, 2014.
The twist on the classic Sleeping Beauty fairytale, told from the point of view of the self-proclaimed ‘Mistress Of All Evil’, is also somewhat of a family affair, with the star’s youngest daughter, five-year-old Vivienne, also seen in the video, running through a lush field as a young Aurora.
As she grows, we see her embodied by an ethereal Elle Fanning, who narrates the trailer.
Perfectly cast: Angelina Jolie terrifyingly embodies the menacing ‘Mistress Of All Evil’ Maleficent in the new trailer for the retelling of the Disney classic, Sleeping Beauty
Bewitching: Elle Fanning stars as Princess Aurora, who is ethereal in the clip, seen here interacting with a fairy-like creature
The clip comes just a day after a new poster featuring the real-life mother-of-six was released, showing her with piercing green eyes, bright red lips, razor-like prosthetic cheekbones and wearinga black horned headpiece.
The teaser shows Aurora confronting the shadowed woman whom she says she has felt watch over her throughout her life.
A star is born: The 38-year-old actress’s five-year-old daughter, Vivienne, is also seen as she portrays a younger version of Aurora, running carefree through a lush field
Entrancing: Aurora is inexplicably drawn to the shiny needle that will seal her fate
‘I know who you are; you’ve been watching over me my whole life. I know you’re there. Your shadow has been following me ever since I was small,’ 15-year-old Elle, as Aurora, tells her in her singsongy voice. ‘Don’t be afraid.’
‘I’m not afraid,’ Maleficent counters, to which Aurora responds, ‘Then come out.’
The evil presence then delivers an ominous warning: ‘Then you’ll be afraid.’
Spellbinding: One tiny prick and the Princess’s fate is sealed as she falls under Maleficent’s evil spell
Terrifying: Angelina was completely transformed to play the evil lead, complete with huge horned headpiece, green contract lenses and dramatic razor-sharp prosthetic cheekbones
The thing nightmares are made of: The mother-of-six has previously spoken of how she had the children on set in tears when they saw her in costume, though daughter Vivienne wasn’t in the least bit afraid
Filming on the movie took place in Buckinghamshire, England last year during Summer.
Angelina, 38, often enjoyed on-set visits from her children, who marveled over their mother as the evil Maleficent.
The movie focuses on the events that hardened Maleficent’s heart, leading her to curse the baby Aurora, played by Fanning.
Showing no fear: The Princess boldly urges her thus-far unseen shadow to show herself, pleading, ‘I know who you are; you’ve been watching over me my whole life’
Sleeping Beauty: The 15-year-old was the perfect choice to play the ethereal princess, with her porcelain skin and long golden locks
Speaking about the new film, Angelina told EW last year: ‘It’s not anti-princess, but it’s the first time they’re looking at this epic woman.
‘I hope in the end you see a woman who is capable of being many things, and just because she protects herself and is aggressive, it doesn’t mean she can’t have other [warmer] qualities’
She continued: ‘It sounds really crazy to say that there will be something that’s good for young girls in this, because it sounds like you’re saying they should be a villain. [Maleficent] is actually a great person. But she’s not perfect. She’s far from perfect.
A CGI marvel: The enchanted forest comes to life with a little help from some special effects
Unleashing her wrath: The all-powerful Maleficent has doom and destruction on her mind
Ominous warning: When approached by Aurora, the dark force warns that the young girl will be afraid once she sees who she’s dealing with
‘In general, it’s a very good message to say, “Let’s look at something from the other side.” But then also, what our challenge will be – and the script writer [The Lion King and Alice in Wonderland’s Linda Woolverton] has already cracked it – is not to simplify it, not to just reverse the story but tell a bigger story that doesn’t point the finger [at Princess Aurora] either.’
Meanwhile, Ange was said to be thrilled when daughter Vivienne, who was four at the time, was cast as the child version of Princess Aurora.
Menacing: Angelina Jolie is menacing as Maleficent in a newly released poster for the Disney film
Marvelous as Maleficent: Angelina was seen filming the blockbuster movie in the UK last summer
A source told The Sun newspaper: ‘Ange thought it would be a fun experience for her and Viv to share, and Viv is a natural.
‘The other kids are now nagging Ange and Brad to land them roles.’
Angelina persuaded producers that her daughter was perfect for the role in the reworking of classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty.
She did her own stunts! The actress was seen being hoisted in the air with a harness
Red carpet style: The mother-of-six is heavenly as she attends the World War Z premiere in Germany this past June
Brad and Angelina have six children together, Maddox, 12, Pax, nine, Zahara, eight, Shiloh, seven, and five-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
However, this is not the first time that one of their offspring has graced the big screen.
Shiloh had a cameo role in The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button as Brad and Cate Blanchett’s daughter when she was 10-months-old.
Doting mother: The brunette beauty is currently in Australia with her children where she is directing her new movie Unbroken
Tiny co-star: Angelina’s twin daughter Vivienne, seen here in the middle, will also star in the movie with her mother
