A tranquil California beach town was rocked by tragedy when a 19-year-old allegedly stabbed a beloved local artist, Rachell Summers, outside Capitola Mall. The 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 incident has left the community reeling, as friends and family grapple with the loss of the 73-year-old grandmother, who was just beginning her journey in grandparenthood.
Tyler Leibelt, the accused, entered a not guilty plea on Wednesday to charges of first-degree murder and the use of a deadly weapon, stemming from the brutal attack that occurred on July 20, 2026. Reports indicate that Leibelt, a student at Cabrillo College, had a disturbing urge to 𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁 before the incident unfolded.
According to investigators, Leibelt took an Uber to his college and then boarded a METRO bus to the mall, where he purchased two switchblade knives from Big 5 Sporting Goods. Sources claim he initially contemplated targeting an elderly Asian man before ultimately setting his sights on Summers, who was unsuspecting at the time.
In a harrowing account, it is reported that Leibelt stabbed Summers more than 11 times. The attack has been described as a random act of violence, prompting Capitola police to lock down the mall as they investigated the 𝓈𝒽𝓸𝒸𝓀𝒾𝓃𝑔 crime.
Leibelt’s troubling history has raised alarms among authorities. Court documents reveal that the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department sought a protective order against him in November due to his expressed desire to cause mass harm. Additionally, he had previously shared violent fantasies and voiced frustration over being released from custody despite his ongoing legal issues.
At the time of Summers’ death, Leibelt was reportedly awaiting trial for another felony charge while living in a sober living environment. As the community mourns, friends and family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to establish a college fund for Summers’ infant grandson, who will soon celebrate his first birthday. The campaign highlights the profound impact of her loss, stating, “Her passing has left a deep void in the lives of everyone who loved her.”
Currently held without bail at Santa Cruz County Jail, Leibelt is set to return to court on October 10 for a preliminary hearing. As this tragic story unfolds, many are left wondering how such a peaceful community could be shaken by such an act of violence.
