A tense police standoff in Oakland ended in a hail of gunfire.
Two officers shot and killed a 43-year-old man.
Authorities said he was armed with a pair of makeshift spears.
The Oakland Police Department released bodycam footage on Wednesday.
The footage shows the confrontation that took place on July 13.
The suspect was identified as Jose Angel Castillo.
The incident happened near a homeless encampment at 40th Avenue and International Boulevard.
Police repeatedly ordered Castillo to drop the weapons.
He refused.
He walked away from the officers while insisting he โwas doing nothing.โ
The newly released bodycam footage captures the moment police opened fire.
The video shows the officers following Castillo as he headed into a parking lot.
They continued to bark commands at him.
Then Castillo turned around.
Several officers used their Tasers.
Castillo still did not surrender.
He appeared to grab one of the officerโs weapons.
He moved toward the officers.
Two officers then opened fire.
The shots sent Castillo to the ground.
He died at the scene.
The two officers who fired their weapons were placed on administrative leave.
This is required by department policy.
The shooting has raised questions from civil rights attorney Jim Chanin.
Chanin monitors the Oakland Police Department.
โDid it justify deadly force?โ he asked KUTV.
โThere are lots of people who are threats. The question is, what kind of force is justified?โ
The department has had two fatal shootings out of three total incidents this year.
That compares to one fatal shooting by this date last year.
