A tragic incident at a pub has led to the death of a 102-year-old man, who reportedly fell after asking for the music volume to be lowered. Phillip Ormerod, a beloved figure in Cwmbran, was critically injured when he was allegedly pushed off the stage during a live performance on August 1.
Ormerod was rushed to the hospital following the event at the Crow’s Nest pub, where emergency services were called at approximately 10:25 PM. Witnesses claim that the elderly man, known for his independence and regular visits to the pub, climbed the three steps to the stage to make his request. However, he was reportedly pushed, causing him to tumble down the stairs and sustain a serious hip injury.
A 56-year-old man from Llanelli has been taken into custody on suspicion of assault, although Gwent Police have not yet clarified if this charge will be updated in light of Ormerod’s passing. The suspect has been released while the investigation continues.
Detective Chief Inspector Shelley Comley addressed the public’s interest in the case, urging people to be mindful of the impact their comments could have on Ormerod’s grieving family and the ongoing inquiry. “There is a family at the heart of this processing the loss of a loved one,” she stated.
Authorities are currently seeking information from anyone who was present at the pub between 10 PM and 11 PM on the night of the incident. As the investigation unfolds, many are left wondering how this heartbreaking event could have occurred in what was meant to be a night of enjoyment.
