One Piece reveals that Luffy’s father, Monkey D. Dragon, has a secret connection with the most unexpected character ever: Dr. Vegapunk. The two men are supposed to be on opposite sides, with Dragon being the leader of the Revolutionary Army and Vegapunk the top scientist of the World Government, but there is clearly a huge secret hiding in their past.

When Vegapunk made his long-awaited debut in One Piece, fans knew that this secretive character would be the key to revealing many of the series’ mysteries. However, no one expected the revelation that came in chapter #1064, according to a spoilers thread on One Piece‘s Reddit page. In previous chapters, Luffy and the Straw Hats landed on Egghead Island, where the laboratory of the world’s greatest scientist is located. They separate and meet different “versions” of Vegapunk, who has cloned himself to keep up with the amount of scientific work generated by his genius intellect. The original Vegapunk still has to appear but, according to the spoilers, he does in chapter #1064, where he is talking on a communication device with a mysterious person, who turns out to be Dragon.

What Is The Connection Between Dragon And Vegapunk?

Fans are now left to speculate what the connection between the two may be. Apparently, Vegapunk is talking about predicting his upcoming death, and Dragon is reassuring him, so the two must have a friendly relationship that dates back to their past. However, considering their respective roles in the One Piece world, they should be sworn enemies. The most likely explanation is that Vegapunk is not a stooge of the World Government, but he must be forced to work for them for some unexplained reason, which is coherent with the fact that now that same World Government has dispatched assassins to kill the scientist. At the moment, the only clear connection between Vegapunk and Dragon is Bartholomew Kuma, the Revolutionary that was turned into a guinea pig for Vegapunk’s Pacifista cyborg experiments.

Considering that the current story arc features Kuma’s daughter, Bonney, as one of the main characters, it’s very likely that soon all these dots will be connected. If Vegapunk, the foremost scientist of the World Government, is revealed to be actually a member of the Revolutionary Army, this could upturn the balance of power in the world forever, as his Pacifista creations could rebel against their masters. While fans of One Piece still know almost nothing about Dragon, every time that Luffy’s father appears, the story shakes up in the most unexpected ways.
