Gray Atkins, the notorious lawyer from EastEnders, is making a jaw-dropping return to Walford after a four-year absence, and fans are buzzing with anticipation. Known for his chilling past and a body count that has left viewers reeling, Gray’s comeback raises questions about who he might target next.
Gray first appeared on Albert Square in 2019, seemingly living the dream with his wife, Chantelle Atkins, played by Jessica Plummer. However, behind the facade of their perfect marriage lurked a nightmare, as Gray subjected Chantelle to severe emotional and physical 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮, including gaslighting and coercive control.
The character is brought to life by actor Toby-Alexander Smith, who has also starred in BBC’s Doctors and SyFy’s Krypton. Off-screen, Toby is a devoted family man, married to Amy Walsh, known for her role in Emmerdale. The couple welcomed their daughters, Bonnie and Nell, in 2021 and 2023, respectively. Toby has candidly discussed his experiences with male post-natal depression, emphasizing the importance of being a supportive father.

During his time on EastEnders, Gray’s dark deeds led to the deaths of three beloved characters. His first victim was Chantelle, whose tragic fate unfolded in a harrowing domestic 𝓪𝓫𝓾𝓼𝓮 storyline. After suffering a miscarriage due to Gray’s violent actions, Chantelle attempted to escape her tormentor. However, her plans were thwarted when Gray discovered her intentions and fatally injured her in a fit of rage, disguising her death as an accident.

Tina Carter, played by Luisa Bradshaw-White, became suspicious of Gray’s narrative and uncovered the truth about Chantelle’s death. In a desperate attempt to silence her, Gray murdered Tina, hiding her body beneath the floorboards of the Argee Bhajee and misleading her family into believing she had gone missing.

Gray’s third victim, Kush Kazemi, met a tragic end driven by jealousy. As Kush and Whitney Dean prepared to leave Walford together, Gray’s obsession escalated, culminating in a violent confrontation that resulted in Kush being pushed onto the tracks of the London Underground, where he was struck by a train.

Gray’s reign of terror finally came to an end when his second wife, Chelsea Fox, discovered his dark past. After a whirlwind romance and the birth of their son, Chelsea began to realize the danger Gray posed. With the help of Whitney and Kheerat Panesar, she gathered evidence of his crimes, leading to Gray’s arrest and life sentence.
Now, even though Gray is behind bars, his presence looms large over Chelsea and their son, Jordan. Following a tragic hit-and-run that left Jordan with life-altering injuries, Chelsea reluctantly accepted help from Gray’s grandmother, Sheila, who is reportedly acting on Gray’s behalf to stay connected to Jordan.
In the latest episode, Sheila is seen attempting to manipulate the situation, but Chelsea’s mother, Denise Fox, fiercely protects her family, warning Sheila to keep her distance. Despite her own struggles with leukemia, Denise is determined to shield her loved ones from Gray’s influence.
As Gray’s return stirs up old wounds and new tensions, fans are left wondering: will he attempt to reclaim his family, or could his thirst for control lead to another tragic outcome?
