Trump administration greenlights legislation to ‘exact a heavy price’ on buyers of Russian oil and gas

The White House just gave the green light to a bill that could shake up the global energy market and put Vladimir Putin on notice. A bipartisan group of senators announced Friday that the Trump administration is backing legislation to slap massive sanctions on countries buying Russian oil and gas.

Senators Lindsey Graham, Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, and Roger Wicker revealed the deal in a joint statement, calling it a necessary step to stop the flow of cash fueling Russia’s war in Ukraine. The bill, which has over 80 supporters in the Senate, had been stalled as President Trump pushed for peace talks.

The proposed law, originally called the Sanctioning Russia Act, would hit nations importing Russian energy with a 500% tariff. That’s a heavy price aimed at cutting off a key funding source for the Kremlin’s military operations. Lawmakers are keeping details of the final agreement under wraps for now.

Graham, fresh from a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, sounded hopeful about the conflict’s end. He told Ukrainian media he’s never been more optimistic, saying the plan balances military support for Ukraine with a clear warning to Russia’s allies.

The senator insisted the White House backing means the bill is on track to become law. He also hinted the legislation rewards countries that switch to alternative energy sources, making it a win for global stability.

Trump met with Zelensky earlier this week at the NATO summit in Turkey, calling their relationship surprisingly strong despite past tensions. The president also reportedly offered Ukraine a license to produce Patriot air-defense missiles, a major show of support.

With the Senate set to take up the bill as early as Monday, all eyes are on how this bold move will reshape the war’s endgame. Could this be the turning point that finally brings peace to Ukraine?
