The tragic disappearance of rising college football star Nolan Wells has captured national attention, as his family seeks answers following his vanishing from a Fourth of July boat party. The 18-year-old athlete’s parents have enlisted the help of prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, determined to uncover the truth about their son’s final moments.
Nolan’s family is particularly concerned about the investigation being conducted in Mississippi, where they fear racial biases may influence the outcome. “The family has some concerns about the state of Mississippi doing an investigation of the death of a young Black man, where a young White student may be looked at as having some culpability,” Crump stated in an interview with ABC News.
The search for Nolan began on the evening of July 4, after he went missing during a holiday outing with friends to Horn Island, located about 10 miles from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Nolan was last seen on the northwest side of the island.
Jayvon Williams, Nolan’s best friend, recounted their last interaction. He arrived separately and shared a heartfelt moment with Nolan, who told him, “I love you.” While on the island, Nolan was reportedly socializing with friends and enjoying the festivities.
Ashlee Cole, a local judge, revealed that her son was part of the group that traveled with Nolan. She mentioned that her son last saw Nolan around 3 PM, just before the group decided to leave the island due to issues with their boat. Nolan opted to stay behind, planning to return later with other friends.
When Nolan failed to return home that evening, his mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing, prompting a multi-agency search operation. Wonsley reached out to the United Cajun Navy for assistance, and volunteers quickly mobilized to help locate her son.
Tragically, the search came to a somber conclusion when a body resembling Nolan’s was discovered near the area where he was last seen. While officials have yet to confirm the identity of the body pending an autopsy, Christine expressed her heartbreak in a poignant social media post.
“My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others,” she wrote, reflecting on the loss of her beloved child.
As investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses, they are urging anyone with original photos or videos from that day to come forward. Reports suggest that a 𝓿𝒾𝓇𝒶𝓁 video may show a confrontation on the island around the time Nolan went missing, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
