Anne Hathaway is a proud mom to two young boys, Jonathan Rosebanks Shulman and Jack Shulman.

Anne Hathaway’s 2 Kids: All About Jonathan and Jack

The Princess Diaries actress and her husband Adam Shulman welcomed Jonathan in 2016, while Jack joined the family three years later in 2019. She has often spoken about how her life has changed since, including the impact motherhood had on her character.

“I didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mom,” she told WSJ Magazine in March 2022. “It’s not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word.”

She added, “And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself. And it’s little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you’re not being your best self.”

From how being a mom made her reprioritize “everything” to what her boys actually think she does for work, here’s everything to know about Anne Hathaway’s two kids, Jonathan and Jack.

Anne Hathaway and husband Adam Shulman arrive at the premiere of Neon’s Colossal at the Vista Theatre on April 4, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

Hathaway and Shulman welcomed their first son, Jonathan, on March 24, 2016. His middle name, Rosebanks, is in honor of Hathaway’s grandmother, Roseline, as well as Shulman’s mother’s maiden name.

Three years later, Hathaway had her second child, Jack, in November 2019. However, she didn’t reveal Jack’s name until he was 11 months old during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

“No coping, just love,” she told then-host Ryan Seacrest of how Jonathan was adjusting to his brother. “Now Jack’s big enough to wrestle with, and that’s brought a new element to their relationship that’s really cute.”

She has been candid about her struggles with pregnancy and fertility

While Hathaway has said she would consider another child, she has also been candid about the challenges that often come with pregnancy and fertility. In July 2019, the WeCrashed actress announced her pregnancy with a mirror selfie on Instagram.

“For everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies,” she wrote in the caption. “Sending you extra love.”

In a March 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway explained that her Instagram post came about because she didn’t want to post something “disingenuous” about the struggles she experienced while trying to conceive.

“Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant, it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know the story is much more nuanced than that for everyone,” she said.

She went on to reveal that she experienced a miscarriage in 2015 while starring in Grounded, a one-woman, off-Broadway play that had her acting out giving birth onstage every night.

“I had to keep it real otherwise…So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’m with you,’ ” she said.

“It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong,” Hathaway added.

She doesn’t want her kids to be child actors

The Ella Enchanted star told WSJ Magazine that she hopes her kids stay out of acting while they’re still young — an approach she learned from her own mother, Kate McCauley Hathaway, who is also an actress.

“I would probably take the same tack that my parents did with me, which is: You have all the time in the world to be a professional actor; you can only be a child once,” Hathaway said.

“So I would encourage them to study, to go to classes, to read, but I would strongly discourage them from starting too young,” she continued. “I think that they’ll be in a position where they’ll be able to go to college and figure out where they want to go from there.”

She keeps her children’s lives private

In a November 2023 interview with NET-A-PORTER’s digital title PORTER, Hathaway opened up about her choice to keep her professional life separate from her personal — and why she hasn’t shared much information about her kids.

“It’s something I feel is not just essential for my health – I’m on a team, it’s my family, and it’s not just about me,” she said.

Hathaway added, “My family has needs, and one of the needs of children is that they need to be able to define their own lives. It doesn’t even occur to me to link the two up, except through gratitude that they serve each other so beautifully. But they serve each other through me, and not through a space that’s outside of myself.”

She has found a balance between her career and motherhood

In March 2022, Hathaway discussed parenting with Hoda Kotb on the Today show, sharing that being a mom of two is “so delicious.”

As far as how parenting affected her professional life, the Golden Globe-winner said: “It’s just logistics, logistics, logistics — how are we doing, what are we doing, where is, who needs what and do we have a sandwich?”

Three months later, in June 2022, Interview Magazine asked Hathaway questions from her friends and fans. The actress’s Witches costar Octavia Spencer recalled seeing her interact with Shulman and their sons and asked, “How do you maintain the joyous work-life balance so seamlessly?”

Hathaway responded by saying that both her career and family “took effort to build and maintain” and that she actively tries to be optimistic. She added that Shulman’s help has made “all the difference.”

In an October 2022 interview on Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagle Show, the Oscar-winning actress elaborated that it also came down to choosing the projects that were worth sacrificing time with her kids for.

“That’s kind of re-prioritized everything, so it’s actually made me a bit choosier because something really has to be so excellent to spend time away from them because they’re so precious to me,” she said.

She gets creative when teaching her son manners

During a 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Hathaway shared that she used Santa Claus to encourage her son Jonathan to share with his baby brother Jack around the holidays.

“This is the first year he’s really believed in Santa Claus,” Hathaway said of Jonathan. “We were driving in the car … and the baby is crying because he wants the cracker that the 4-year-old has, and the 4-year-old will not give him a cracker.”

The actress continued, “And then finally, I just have this spark and I go, ‘Okay, Johnny, but what about Santa?’ His hand shot out straight towards me, I had the entire box of crackers suddenly, there was no argument. Adam and I turned to each other and we went, ‘Oh my God, this is so powerful.’ ”

Her oldest son thinks she is a librarian

In 2020, Hathaway shared that her son Jonathan didn’t know what his mom did for work.

“He knows that Mommy goes to work,” she shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I recently left to go to do a project and we were getting him ready because I was going to be gone for a little bit and I was like, ‘Okay, so Mommy’s going to work.’ … And he stopped and he looked me really deep in my eyes and he’s like, ‘Mommy, are you going to work at the library?’ ”

After host Jimmy Kimmel asked why Jonathan thought that was her job, the actress said: “Your guess is as good as mine! We went with it and I was like, ‘Yes, yes. Mommy is going to work at the library.’ So he thinks I’m a librarian, which is a form of storytelling, so we’re just kind of going with that until further notice.”

She doesn’t try to be a perfect mom

Hathaway may make best-dressed lists with her red carpet looks, but she embraces the messier parts of being a mom. In a 2019 appearance on PeopleTV, she said, “I try to be nice to myself. I’m not big on mommy guilt.”

In 2017, she opened up about filming Colossal while pregnant with her first son. “We’re all dealing with balance, but I just don’t want to feel guilty,” the actress told PEOPLE. “I don’t need to be a perfect mom to be a good mom. … I had to learn a long time ago to not let my feelings about not being perfect stand in the way of enjoying my life.”
