Jensen Ackles joined the hit Amazon series The Boys in its third season as the grizzled, PTSD-riddled Soldier Boy, and according to showrunner Eric Kripke, there could be more Soldier Boy coming in the future.
For those unaware, the finale of Season 3 — which premiered this past week — saw Ackles’ Soldier Boy seemingly defeated for good after a major fight breaks out and leads to Maeve (Dominique McElligott) losing her powers and Soldier Boy being put back into cryogenic stasis under the watchful eye of Laila Robins’ Grace Mallory.
Despite the ambiguous status of Soldier Boy, Kripke said that he wanted to leave the window “open” for Ackles to return should they want to.
“The old TV adage is like, never kill anyone unless you really, really have to. Never close a door, open a window,” Kripke said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “We’ll all have to wait and see, but I can’t imagine the series ending without Soldier Boy making another appearance.”
As for the actor himself, Ackles — who worked with Kripke before on the hit television series Supernatural — said that he’s aware of what Kripke does with characters and mentioned that while plans were discussed, he doesn’t know exactly what the future for Soldier Boy holds.
“I know Kripke is very smart about how he sends his characters off because he can always bring them back,” Ackles said. “So I know there are plans in talks, but I don’t know exactly what those are. But I told Krip, ‘Look, man, put me in anytime. You tell me when to come running, I’ll come running.’”
