Billy Butcher in season four of The Boys may find herself in for some unsettling news after Erin Moriarty’s recent remarks regarding Starlight.
Erin Moriarty, star of The Boys’ Starlight, hinted at some details about her persona that would worry Billy Butcher in season 4. Despite having distinct dynamics, Billy Butcher and Starlight have both been important characters since the first season and are still a part of the core cast. Superpowered Starlight/Annie January joined The Seven in the beginning of the series, but after learning about Vought International and realizing the other members didn’t share her ideals, she gradually started working with The Boys. Billy Butcher knew there was some benefit to having Starlight on the team even though he detested supes and opposed her joining.
As the show goes on, the initially antagonistic pair has learned to get along, but they still don’t have a lot of affection for one another. They both have a thing for Hughie; Starlight is in a love relationship with him, while Butcher considers Hughie to be one of his best teammates. Starlight still has some misgivings about Butcher, especially since he concealed the side effects of Temp V from Hughie. Similarly, Butcher’s hate of supes keeps him from fully supporting Starlight even though she helped expose Vought. Erin Moriarty’s remarks on Starlight, concerningly for Butcher, could only intensify the two’s dislike for one another in The Boys season 4.
The Boys Star Erin Moriarty Says Starlight Is “Adjusting Well” To Her New Role
Starlight’s actor reveals a positive change for the supe in season 4
Erin Moriarty claimed that Starlight is “adjusting great” after leaving The Seven in The Boys season 4. Season 3 showed Starlight standing up to Vought and exposing them to the world on social media, officially ending her affiliation with them. She had been a part of The Seven’s lineup since The Boys season 1, but clearly more for the voice that it gave her rather than any loyalty to the group. Furthermore, Starlight was aware of how evil Homelander was and the awful nature of supes like The Deep. Now, she has finally become independent and, according to Erin Moriarty, Starlight’s The Boys season 4 story appears to be a positive one.
Starlight no longer being part of the show’s antagonistic group allows her to find a new role and try to do good through other methods. It seemed that using her status as part of The Seven was the best way of doing so, but Starlight has amassed enough supporters that she can help people on her own. This allows her to be the hero she desperately wants to be while also helping The Boys take down Homelander and Vought in the right way. While they have wronged each of The Boys in some way, Vought and The Seven have also done terrible things to Starlight, who still wants to bring them to justice.
Billy Butcher May Be Losing His Grip On The Boys In Season 4
Starlight could be on the way to replacing Billy Butcher in The Boys
Starlight excelling outside The Seven suggests Billy Butcher may be losing his control over The Boys in season 4. Thus far, Butcher has been the group’s leader, even if it hasn’t always proved harmonious. Every member has questioned his leadership at some point, at times even flat-out refusing to work with him. This escalated even more in season 3, meaning Starlight may pick up the pieces with Butcher losing his leadership duties. There is no official hierarchy when it comes to The Boys, although Butcher tends to be the one leading the charge and coming up with wild plans that don’t always work out.
If Starlight is to become a permanent member of the group, it could mean Butcher has to relinquish his control. Starlight and Butcher’s differing approaches mean he would likely oppose her ideas, but if the rest of the group is on board, he’ll be left on the sidelines. This could lead to Butcher leaving the group and going solo, or perhaps teaming up with the Guardians of Godolkin from Gen V to give Butcher a more powerful team at his disposal. As stubborn as he can be, Butcher knows he needs allies, but it wouldn’t be uncharacteristic of him to try and go one-on-one with Homelander in a scorched-earth-type battle.
Starlight Has A Lot To Offer As A New Team Leader
Many of Starlight’s leadership qualities are greater than Butcher’s
Although Starlight taking charge of the team would be a big change, she has plenty to offer as a leader. Whether she directly takes over from Butcher or starts her own team with some of the members, she is more than capable of steering the ship. In season 3, she worked frequently with Mother’s Milk, with the two being much more like-minded than MM and Butcher. As a leader, Starlight would be more welcome to other’s ideas and plan things more thoroughly. Whereas Butcher is rasher and more frantic, Starlight will be aware that the best way to take down Vought is through a thought-out, foolproof plan.
However, not all members would enjoy taking orders from her, with Hughie already struggling with the fact he’s always the one being saved by Starlight and never the one saving her. Regardless, she proves a useful ally, as outside Kimiko, no one else in The Boys has permanent superpowers. Temp V is a far less viable option as well, considering too many uses will kill them. Therefore, being a powerful supe gives Starlight that extra edge as a leader. Starlight’s freedom from Vought will be sure to shake up The Boys season 4, and could lead to her being a strong new leader for the titular group.
