Sam Smith is renowned for pushing the envelope in terms of style, but their most recent appearance has been judged more salon-worthy than red carpet.
Sam was fully hidden in New York, a far cry from the Unholy singer’s sly Vivienne Westwood appearance or their even bolder on-stage antics.
The 31-year-old icon accessorized with a black Prada purse, a dramatic black billowing garment that enveloped them from neck to toe and was fitted in around the wrists.
When Sam dropped by The People Gallery TikTok to talk about their outfit, he made sure to flaunt his fairly iconic black platform boots.
The fashion account, run by Maurice Kamara, has over one million followers and has also shown off fits from Kim Kardashian, Willem Dafoe, and Salma Hayek.
However, in a rare miss, Sam’s outfit failed to impress — despite 1.2 million likes on the video — as fans compared it to a hairdresser’s cape.
‘Going for haircut?’ commented Lolli while Lang Skrimshire joked: ‘When you walk out of the barber still wearing the cape.’
‘Being prepared for a haircut anytime anywhere is wild,’ joked user Eidndur about the free-flowing dress which also had pockets.
Marilyn Ramirez added: ‘Looks like the cape my hairdresser puts on me to do my hair😂.’
Other TikTokers teased that Sam was in ‘the eid spirit’ and wearing an ‘abaya’ as Simply Faaiza declared: ‘Sister Sam in [their] abaya girl era✨️.’
Sam was out and about in New York.
They were wearing a robe worth over £2k.
But fans declared it was a hairdresser’s robe.
An abaya is a robe-like dress worn predominantly by Muslim women, as user Sumiii joked: ‘We love to see Sam smith in abaya!’
Along with the barber and abaya comments were comparisons to Voldemort from Harry Potter and Dune’s Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.
The Rick Owens dress appears to be their Lido Runway Tabard Gown in black, which will set you back a cool €2,690 (£2,312).
Maurice was all compliments in the short interview, calling Sam’s look ‘amazing’ despite the unconvinced audience.
The Stay With Me hitmaker was asked for a styling tip and replied: ‘Every day start again. That’s what I do personally.’
The outfit featured Rick Owens pieces.
Sam looked to be beaming in the interview.
They are known for their out-there fashion looks.
They praised both Rick Owens and Vivienne Westwood as fashion inspirations currently and added: ‘I never thought Vivienne Westwood clothes were for me and then recently I just can’t stop wearing Westwood. I love it!’
Moving on from fashion Sam shared their favourite meal is ‘anchovies with some burrata and a vodka martini’.
The five-time Grammy winner was spotted fairly dressed down in New York days before, rocking jeans and an open black shirt.
They chatted to their unknown friend, who was equally dressed down in an all black tracksuit, while they enjoy a break from their Gloria world tour.
