Zayn is getting ready to release his latest album a little less than two months.
In anticipation of Room Under the Stairs arriving in May, the former One Direction singer has doled out the first taste of the project, a single titled “What I Am.” Sadly, the track was not met with much enthusiasm from listeners in his home country, as it earns a very low debut.
“What I Am” launches on the U.K. songs chart at No. 89. It now stands as the second-lowest-charting track of his solo career in the country.
At the moment, the only tune from Zayn’s catalog that has reached the U.K. songs chart but peaked lower than “What I Am,” is called “Entertainer.” That cut only climbed to No. 95, despite being promoted as a single from his album Icarus Falls.
These are still early days for “What I Am,” and the single could rise higher in the coming weeks. While that is certainly a possibility–and not even a far-off one–it’s also not necessarily a given. These days, many songs from well-known acts like Zayn hit their peak when they arrive on charts all around the world, based on how streaming factors into rankings and the excitement generated by fans on social media.
