Vivid Vintage Photos of Life in London in the 1970s

The nostalgic images show the capital’s landmarks in the 1970s, a decade of feminism, Arsenal’s FA cup win and the launch of the concord. The era is known for being a time of cultural and political change – especially due to high inflation levels, IRA bomb threats and widespread trade union strikes. These fascinating collection of pictures, taken by photographer David Rostance, reveal what the capital looked like in this bygone era.

“I have been a keen amateur photographer since the age of 13, focussing mainly but not exclusively, on railway subjects,” Rostance told the Standard. He specialised in taking pictures of the UK’s railway and bus routes and began snapping quintessential British scenes in the sixties, armed with his Kodak Brownie 44A. “I began taking photographs in 1963 in a bid to record the rapidly disappearing steam locomotives then still in use at that time,” he said. “My interest waned following the demise of steam operations on British Railways in 1968 and went through an hiatus which lasted until 1975.”

More fascinating vintage photographs could be found at Rostance’s amazing Flickr site.

A desperate farmer spent his final hours writing down his thoughts on how to protect the future of his business from the government’s inheritance tax raid before taking his own life, it can be revealed. John Charlesworth’s son found a handwritten note where the Yorkshire farmer had jotted down his ideas for how best to leave the farm to his children. The musings, left on a clipboard immediately beneath a suicide note, included questions for the family’s solicitor covering costs, capital gains tax, protected agricultural exemptions and what gifted assets could be sheltered from inheritance tax under the seven-year rule.

Kamala Harris has been slammed for waiting hours to concede the 2024 election to Donald Trump as the results painted a bleak picture at the scale of her loss. The vice president finally called the president-elect just before 2pm Eastern Time on Wednesday and told him about the importance of the ‘peaceful transfer of power’. As it stands, the vice president is on track to do worse than Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential election. She could even be on pace to have the worst Electoral College result of any Democrat since the 1988 race.

Cricket legend Sir Ian Botham has revealed he was saved by his fellow great Merv Hughes when he took a painful fall into crocodile-infested waters in Australia’s wild tropical north last week. ‘Beefy’ Botham, 68, was on a four-day fishing trip with his former Ashes opponent when disaster almost struck as he tripped and took a tumble that left him with severe bruising – and put him at risk of an attack by a saltwater croc. ‘At the end of the day, Crocodile Beefy survived,’ the former all-rounder said, mixing his nickname with a reference to the hit Australian film Crocodile Dundee.
