Sydney Sweeney wanted to ‘push the boundaries’ in Immaculate as she admits she doesn’t like to rehearse: ‘I don’t plan what is going to happen’

Sydney Sweeney was determined to ‘push the boundaries’ in Immaculate.

The 26-year-old star leads the cast of the new psychological horror movie as Cecilia and had no issues with taking risks in the film’s harrowing closing scenes.

‘I love finding places that I didn’t know I could unlock – pushing the boundaries and the limits of what people expect to see from me,’ Sydney told Variety.

‘I wish that I had a formulaic answer for how I did it. But whenever a director calls ‘action’, it’s just like a switch.

‘And I allow all of Sydney’s thoughts and feelings and emotions to disappear. And I am now whatever character I’m playing – I’m Cecilia at the moment.

‘I love finding places that I didn’t know I could unlock – pushing the boundaries and the limits of what people expect to see from me,’ Sydney told Variety

‘I don’t like to rehearse; I don’t plan what is going to happen. What you saw (in the film’s final moments) was the first take.’

The Madame Web actress had always wanted to star in a horror film and embraced the ’emotional trauma’ that her character goes through in the picture.

Sydney said: ‘I always want to do something new. I don’t want to do the same thing over and over again. It’s a lot of the draw, character discovery – I love Cecilia’s journey, and I loved the emotional trauma that she goes through.

‘And being in the horror genre is fun, because in that genre, there’s no limitations or boundaries. I always find it so funny when people pick apart a horror film’s rules, or its storytelling. I’m like, ‘It’s a horror film. You’re just having fun.’ It’s not a movie for the Oscars; you know that going into it.

‘We want to create something good, but it’s fun having characters that can go to such extreme, absurd places, and people don’t question it.’

Sweeney feels as if she has no control over the audience or general public’s view of her body when it comes to her movies.

‘I wish that I had a formulaic answer for how I did it. But whenever a director calls “action,” it’s just like a switch. And I allow all of Sydney’s thoughts and feelings and emotions to disappear. And I am now whatever character I’m playing – I’m Cecilia at the moment,’ she explained

The 26-year-old actress has amassed quite the success this year, but said in an interview on Monday that some focus on her body and not her acting.

She told Variety that she is aware of what people are saying about her, ‘I see it and I just can’t allow myself to have a reaction, I don’t know how to explain it — I’m still trying to figure it out myself.

‘People feel connected and free to be able to speak about me in whatever way they want, because they believe that I’ve signed my life away. That I’m not on a human level anymore, because I’m an actor.’

‘That these characters are for everybody else, but then me as Sydney is not for me anymore. It’s this weird relationship that people have with me that I have no control or say over,’ she finished.’

However, the focus on her body was most notable when she was featured on Saturday Night Live just weeks ago.

In her monologue she started off by saying, ‘People only see me as the girl on TV who screams, cries, and has 𝑠e𝑥.’

The star feels that at this point in her career, she has been type-casted for her body-type.

During one part of the segment, she displayed a PowerPoint detailing her strategy for making it big in showbusiness – which read ‘show boobs.’

In another section of the comedy sketch, she played a Hooters waitress in which she wore a super lowcut white shirt that showed off her chest as she served a table of men.

After release of Anyone But You, Sweeney cleverly toyed with a rumor that she and co-star Glen Powell were romantically linked. At one point during the episode, she made an attempt to refute the idea.

Upon requesting that the camera move to her fiancé, whom worked on the film with her, Powell found himself in the frame, awkwardly mugging the audience.

The actress also touched on the daily direct messages she receives via social media and claimed that they are ‘not a safe space.’

At the end of the day, she has kept her feelings separate from her job as she realizes that she it working for herself, not the audience.

As of 2022, Sweeney has been engaged to Chicago businessman Jonathan Davino who supports her in her acting ventures.

The pair were first linked back in 2018 when they attended Hulu’s 2018 Emmy Party and a Kate Spade dinner party together.

‘Everyone is always so curious about who I’m with and what’s that like, but I think it’s important to have something for me,’ she told Glamour UK.
