New MCU fan art imagines Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts team banding together to solve one of the franchise’s most confusing Phase 4 cliffhangers.
A three-year-old MCU cliffhanger has been addressed in new fan art bringing together Marvel Studios’ new superpowered team in Thunderbolts. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed the development of Thunderbolts in July 2022, and revealed the cast of returning antiheroes and reformed villains two months later. Including the likes of Bucky Barnes, Yelena Belova, Ghost, Taskmaster, US Agent and Red Guardian, the Thunderbolts are set to band together in the MCU’s Phase 5 under the watchful eye of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and the CIA. There is also speculation that Thunderbolts will address a major Phase 4 cliffhanger.
A popular theory suggests Thunderbolts will explore one of the MCU’s most confusing and frustrating cliffhangers by revisiting the Celestial Tiamut that emerged from beneath the Earth’s surface in Eternals. The giant Celestial, that was killed by the collective power of the Eternals, has only been mentioned once since 2021’s Eternals, but new MCU fan art shared by Art of Time Travel imagined the Thunderbolts team atop the Celestial.
While the storyline details of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts project are still unclear, there are several theories about what adventures the upcoming superhuman team will embark on in its Phase 6 debut.
Why Thunderbolts Might Finally Address Eternals’ Celestial Cliffhanger
While Phase 6’s Thunderbolts may seem an unorthodox place for Eternals’ Celestial cliffhanger to be addressed, one popular theory suggests that the Celestial Tiamut’s body may be the source of a highly-anticipated resource in the MCU. While vibranium has been around for several years, adamantium is yet to be introduced to the MCU, but with characters such as Wolverine and Bullseye potentially making their way into the franchise’s main continuity, the fictional metal will soon need to debut. One major theory suggests that Tiamut’s body was transformed into adamantium in Eternals, which the CIA may want to acquire in Thunderbolts.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever saw Valentina and the CIA desperate to get their hands on vibranium, but adamantium could present itself as a more obtainable resource after Eternals. While the Thunderbolts journeying to the Celestial Tiamut’s body in Thunderbolts perhaps goes against theories that the team will be escorting or battling the Sentry in the MCU’s Phase 6, this storyline certainly fits the CIA’s plans in the MCU’s future. This could lead to an epic battle between the United States and Wakanda, with Thunderbolts perhaps becoming one of the most important MCU projects in recent years.
