Twenty-seven years. That is how long Russia took to turn a Cold War battle cruiser back into a warship again. And by the time it finally happened in June 2026, the world around it had changed. But that was the easy part.

We are talking about the *Admiral Nakhimov*, a 28,000-ton nuclear-powered missile cruiser that had just finished the final stage of its sea trials after a modernization process so lengthy that the sailors assigned to crew it were born after the ship had already been docked and rusting in the yard. Today, we ask the question official Russian media does not want us to ask: Did the Kremlin just release one of the most heavily armed surface combatants on the planet, or did it spend billions of dollars and nearly three decades to build the most expensive target in the world? Let us start with what this ship actually is. The *Admiral Nakhimov* is one of four Kirov-class battle cruisers built by the Soviet Union.
Absolute sea monsters designed to track and destroy American carrier strike groups in the open ocean. Construction began in the 1980s, and it entered service in 1988 under its original name, *Kalinin*. It served for about a decade in the Soviet and then Russian navies before being pulled into the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk in 1999. At the time, it was announced as routine maintenance.
No one involved in that decision could have imagined that routine maintenance would stretch into the 2020s. To understand why the *Nakhimov* stayed there all that time, you have to understand how broken and disorganized Russia was in the years after the Soviet Union collapsed. The economy was in a terrible state, the ruble was worthless, and the naval command was stuck with a fleet of expensive Soviet toys and no money to maintain them. Worse, a large part of the industrial base that built and maintained these ships no longer even existed within the new Russian Federation.
The *Admiral Kuznetsov*, Russia’s only aircraft carrier, was built in a Ukrainian shipyard, and Russia had to adapt after the breakup. So when a ship like the *Nakhimov* needed serious hull work, Russia had neither the money nor the means to do it properly. There were half-hearted talks about resuming work in the early 2000s, but nothing concrete happened until the 2010s. Real modernization efforts finally got an official signature in 2013 with a contract worth about 50 billion rubles, roughly $1.
5 billion at the time. The plan was as ambitious as naval refits can get. The ship was stripped down to the hull. The entire weapons suite was replaced.
Out went the original system designed to carry 20 P-700 Granit anti-ship missiles, the weapon on which the entire Soviet naval doctrine was built, designed for mass strikes against American carrier groups from long distances. In came new vertical launch systems with a much larger capacity, over 80 missiles in total, combining long-range anti-ship cruise missiles, land-attack missiles, and advanced air defense interceptors. The electronics were completely gutted and replaced with modern digital systems. But the power plant was another story.
The nuclear reactors were a major source of concern. There were repeated delays and technical problems, and at one point, there were reports that the entire reactor compartment had to be cut open and reworked. As the years dragged on, the project became a running joke among naval analysts. Every year, the Russian Ministry of Defense would promise that the ship would be back in service “next year,” and every year it was not.
Then 2022 happened. Russia invaded Ukraine, and the war changed everything about how Moscow looked at its navy. The Black Sea Fleet suffered devastating losses, including the sinking of the flagship *Moskva*. Suddenly, the *Nakhimov* was no longer a prestige project; it was a strategic necessity.
The pressure to get the ship back into the water intensified dramatically, though the timeline kept slipping. And then there was the October 2024 incident, which most Western media barely noticed. Satellite imagery showed a large vessel near Severodvinsk surrounded by tugboats, which was unusual given that the ship was supposed to be in dry dock. Within days, there were unconfirmed reports of a radiation spike in the area.
The Russian military dismissed the reports as Western propaganda. But independent monitors, including Norwegian radiation sensors near the border, recorded elevated levels of radioactive isotopes. The Russian government eventually admitted “planned maintenance work on a nuclear-powered vessel” but gave no details. The Western consensus is that something went wrong during reactor work, and at least part of the crew had to be evacuated.
The project went silent for months. State media stopped mentioning it entirely. Then, in early 2025, the ship appeared again in satellite photos, still in the yard. By that point, the world had moved on.
The war in Ukraine continued, Russia was taking heavy sanctions, and the *Nakhimov* had become a symbol of everything wrong with Russian military procurement: massive budgets, endless delays, and obsolete equipment. At least that was the narrative. Then, in June 2026, without any prior announcement, the Russian Ministry of Defense released footage of the *Admiral Nakhimov* conducting sea trials. There it was, under way in the White Sea, black smoke trailing from its stacks, looking both terrifying and oddly obsolete.
The video showed it firing a new anti-ship missile, and the launch was successful. Russian media exploded with triumphant headlines. The ship was declared ready for combat. President Putin personally praised the crew and the shipbuilders.
The implication was clear: Russia had delivered something the West did not expect. But then the analysts started counting. The cruise missile that was fired in the video is a subsonic weapon with a range of about 450 kilometers. That means the *Nakhimov* has to get within striking distance of its target.
For a nuclear-powered cruiser, that is not a problem in terms of speed. The problem is that 450 kilometers is well within the engagement range of modern Western anti-ship weapons, including the Standard Missile-6 and the Naval Strike Missile. And a 28,000-ton ship radiating nuclear heat is a very easy target to find. Furthermore, the ship has no sonar system protecting it from submarines.
A single modern attack submarine could sink it before it ever got within missile range. The question is not whether it looks impressive, it does, but whether it is actually survivable against any serious adversary. And the answer, most Western analysts agree, is that it is not. The *Admiral Nakhimov* is a museum piece, a Cold War relic that was dragged into the 21st century at enormous cost, not because it made strategic sense, but because the Russian leadership could not admit that they had abandoned it.
Here is the real irony: the ship’s existence says more about Russia’s weakness than its strength. Its announcement was timed to distract from the fact that the Russian Navy lost its only aircraft carrier, had a new frigate that cannot be mass-produced due to sanctions, and is burning through its most advanced missiles at a rate that is not sustainable. And while the *Nakhimov* was spending 27 years in dry dock, the United States built an entirely new class of destroyers, China built three aircraft carriers, and the entire nature of naval warfare shifted toward drones, unmanned underwater vehicles, and coordinated multi-domain attacks. A single giant ship, no matter how powerful, is now a target waiting to be hit.
So when the *Nakhimov* sails out of Severodvinsk, all spruced up and bristling with weapons, it is a symbol. But the symbol is not what the Kremlin wants you to think. It is not a comeback story. It is a monument to two decades of mismanagement, broken promises, and the unwillingness to let go of a dream that died with the Soviet Union.
The ship will likely be paraded, promoted, and used as a propaganda victory. And the more they show it, the more clearly everyone, including their own sailors, will see the truth.
