Is It Time To Say Farewell To Sonny? Maurice Benard Contemplates Retirement

If there is one thing that is certain about soaps, it is uncertainty. ABC’s General Hospital is no different. In fact, it is more prone to uncertainty than any other soap. Given the vast pool of characters it has and the multiple storylines that go on at the same time. But above everything else, it has proven time and again that it is not scared of killing off major characters portrayed by highly revered actors. Could that cannon ever discharge on Maurice Bernard’s Sonny Corinthos? Let’s find out!

Earlier, in August, 2023, General Hospital star Maurice Benard had mentioned that his contract was coming to an end. Usually, when that time approaches for an actor, either a new contract is signed or the character is written off. But, the fact that Maurice as Sonny is truly the backbone of GH makes it less likely that he would be written off. But then, stranger things have happened on soaps. Besides, Maurice did once mention that he will eventually retire and his run as Sonny will come to an end.

General Hospital fans have often worried and wondered if that time could be around the corner. In October 2023, Maurice Benard opened up about playing Sonny for 30 long years. He reflected that when a character goes on for a long time, it is important that it grows and evolves with time. And he feels that’s exactly what he has tried to do with Sonny. “I play what they give me to the best of my ability; that’s basically my job to convey what the characters are going through at every moment,” he mused.

Furthermore, the General Hospital megastar admitted that he loved playing Mike on the soap. However, not many fans were on board with the whole Mike and Nixon Falls chapter in Sonny’s life. But at least it gave Maurice something different to enact than what he had been doing for a long stretch. In fact, he replied to fans on X (Twitter), saying that he feels hopeful about what’s coming for Sonny on GH. Thus, it seems that he will be around for a while longer.

Although, there will certainly come a time when fans will have to say goodbye to Sonny on General Hospital. But at least that time is not right now, and we are extremely happy about it.
