LeBron James’s Development: “It’s Like He’s Playing Chess,” says Doc Rivers

Doc Rivers, reflecting on LeBron James’ evolution, highlighted a significant turning point in the superstar’s career that showcased his transformation into a student of the game. Rivers recalled an exhibition game when LeBron, then with the Miami Heat, began calling out the opposing team’s sets, demonstrating a newfound understanding and strategic insight into the game.

“One thing you were talking about LeBron, you remember that LeBron early in his career was, he was a great player, but he wasn’t a student. It’s amazing. I think when he got traded to Miami, we had an exhibition game.”

“And LeBron started calling our sets. He coming up, whatever, we’re gonna switch this… And right when he did that… Whoever was our assistant coach, I turned around and said, -‘Oh, boy. We in trouble.'”

“And when he started calling our sets out, I was like, oh my gosh. LeBron is becoming a student. And now when you watch him now, it’s like he’s playing chess, everybody else is playing. It’s ridiculous now watching him. His brain has evolved to where he’s at. It’s amazing, he didn’t always have that.’

“Oh, he can play forever right now when you watch. I watch him, I’ve been watching him. He’s moving two steps earlier before they pass.”

During the early years of LeBron James’ career, he was undoubtedly a great player, but according to Rivers, he wasn’t initially characterized as a student of the game. However, the moment when LeBron started calling out plays signaled a shift in his approach to basketball. Rivers, then coaching against LeBron, recalled feeling a sense of trouble and realizing that LeBron was becoming a more cerebral player.

Rivers emphasized the remarkable evolution of LeBron’s basketball IQ, comparing it to playing chess while others are playing a different game. The veteran coach marveled at LeBron’s ability to anticipate plays, move strategically, and demonstrate a level of understanding that goes beyond the physical aspects of the game.

LeBron’s current performance in his 21st season at the age of 39 has been nothing short of exceptional. Averaging 25.1 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists with impressive shooting percentages, LeBron’s longevity and continued impact on the court is a testament to his basketball intelligence and evolution as a player.

Rivers expressed amazement at how LeBron’s brain has evolved over the years, allowing him to play at an elite level even in the later stages of his career.
