Rising Tension: The Boys Season 4’s Shocking Escalation.

The Boys and Gen V composer Christopher Lennertz teases an increasing number of shocking and crazy things to come in The Boys season 4.

The Boys is soon to return after its spinoff show Gen V set up big things to come in the Vought Cinematic Universe’s flagship show. Since The Boys premiered in 2019, it has adapted some of the most shocking sequences from its source material (a comic book series of the same name) with vivid realism and managed to up the ante with each consecutive season.

With body explosions, homicidal superheroes, Nazis, orgies, and more already on the books, it’s hard to imagine where The Boys will go next.

The first image from The Boys season 4 doesn’t provide any answers, but longtime series composer Christopher Lennertz offered a clue when discussing his work on Gen V. Lennertz has worked on The Boys since it was created, and has worked with Gen V co-composer Matt Bowen to ensure the series’ craziest moments are realized to their full effect. From what he had to say, viewers looking for more of those moments in The Boys season 4 will not be disappointed:

Christopher Lennertz: I don’t think we can say anything other than [that] we’ve seen the whole season. We’re in the thick of it, and it’s really great. It’s got what every season has had, which is those moments [where] you’re like, “Oh my God, I can’t believe they did that.” [In] every season it feels like there’s more of them. In the beginning, I’m like, “Oh, my God, did Homelander crash the plane?” and then, “Oh, my God, why did everyone’s head explode?” and then, “Wait, she’s a Nazi?” Then, it’s like, “Penis exploded? What the hell?” and then, “Wait. Is he having 𝑠e𝑥 with an octopus?” It kept getting bigger and bigger, and I would say that there are many of those moments as well; probably a continually rising number of shock moments.

The Crazy Moments In Boys Season 4 Won’t Just Be Blood & Guts (Which Is Good)

With the possibility of Gen V characters joining The Seven very real, The Boys season 4 will have plenty of opportunities to create the wild moments for which it is known. While the show’s most memorable surprises are often of the violent kind, music has played a big part in The Boys’ unique world in recent seasons.

It’s a smart development for the series, as it feeds the show’s penchant for surprising moments without limiting possibilities. Lennertz also teased a ratcheting up of musical moments in the upcoming season:

Christopher Lennertz: If we’re looking at the whole universe, I would say I’m very partial to all the song moments, specifically because I also love working with our cast. To be able to have these in-joke recording sessions with Karen, or Jensen, when he’s doing Blondie, or Laurie Holden. I’ve got to give a huge, huge shoutout to Laurie Holden for “Chimps Don’t Cry”, because she worked her tail off. Then, she made that video where she’s out in the field with chimps and tears, and that’s what I love. I love watching how much our cast will commit to the gags of the songs and play them so straight, and so emotional and authentic. [That’s] what she did and, obviously, what Erin did with the Starlight song. I will tell you, there are a couple of doozies that may appear that I can’t say any more about.

The musical moments in The Boys are often more than simply silly; they can help give a fuller picture of a character as well. Screen Rant lists Soldier Boy singing Blondie as one of the biggest WTF moments in The Boys, but it’s a perfect way to expand the audience’s understanding of his ego and fame. Karen Fukuhara has one of the standout moments in The Boys season 3 as well, with Kimiko singing “Dream A Little Dream of Me”; that moment was an expression of Kimiko’s growth as a character and, while surreal, got the point across in style.

The original songs Lennertz wrote for The Boys also do a service to the world of the show. Season 3 features hilarious songs like “You’ve Got a License to Drive (Me Crazy)”, a pitch-perfect riff on the early 2000s boy band era.

While funny on their own, these surprising musical offerings flesh out the heightened world of The Boys in which superheroes are also movie stars, singers, preachers, and other highly regarded societal figures. With The Boys season 4 likely to release in 2024, viewers will have the opportunity to feast their eyes—and ears—on more exciting left-field moments.
