Sir Alex Ferguson’s Cheshire mansion is on the market for £3.5million

Sir Alex Ferguson has put his £3.5million house up for sale following the death of his wife Cathy.

The legendary former Manchester United manager, 81, has lived in the five-bedroom house, nestled in the leafy Cheshire countryside, for over a decade. He and Cathy moved there in 2010 from Macclesfield so Sir Alex would have a shorter drive to United’s training ground in Carrington, report the Mirror.

The impressive property is described as “deceptively spacious” and boasts a games room (with a bar in it), a gym, a massive garden, a luxurious open-plan kitchen and a gorgeous chandeliered hallway. A ‘Ferguson clan’ tartan carpet also lines one of the staircases as well as the games room.

Sir Alex is a descendant of the Fergusons of Argyll, who are in turn descended from Fergus Mor, king of the ancient territory of Dal Riata, which now makes up much of the west coast of Scotland, as well as part of what is now north east Northern Ireland.

The listing agents say: “This impressive, deceptively spacious detached property is situated on one of Cheshire’s most desirable roads. Positioned within in a very private, gated and secure plot. Walking distance of Wilmslow town centre and the train station. This distinctive family home boasts approximately 7,000 sq ft.”

Lady Cathy Ferguson passed away aged 84 last month. A number of former Man United players attended the funeral in a heart-warming show of support for their former boss, including David Beckham, Gary Neville and Michael Carrick.

“Everyone at Manchester United sends our heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy,” read a Man United statement when news of Cathy’s death first emerged. “Lady Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a tower of strength for Sir Alex throughout his career.”

Sir Alex met Cathy, who he once described as a “bedrock” in his life, back in 1964 and they were married two years later. The couple had three children together, all sons, including former footballer and current Peterborough United boss Darren Ferguson. They also have 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

United and England legend Bobby Charlton died less than three weeks after Cathy’s passing, and Sir Alex was one of a number of high profile footballing figures to attend the funeral, which was earlier this month.
