I found a spy camera in my bedroom, and I still have no idea how long it had been watching me. My stepdad, who has been in my life since I was eight, installed a surveillance camera outside my window to scan the backyard while my mom, my two younger brothers, and he packed up for a camping trip. I couldn’t go because of work, so I stayed behind to housesit and feed the animals. He had put up new outdoor cameras recently, so when he positioned one near my window, I didn’t think anything of it.

The next day, my boyfriend stayed over and discovered what I hadn’t noticed. The camera that ran from outside my window into my room was being powered by one of those spy camera power blocks. Not an ordinary charger. A spy camera block.
It was positioned to point directly at my bedroom door from the far wall. Direct view of my entire room. The room where I change. The camera even had an SD card in it.
I tried to rationalize everything at first. Maybe he grabbed the wrong charger. Maybe he was just trying to watch for intruders. But there is no rational excuse for a camera in my bedroom.
And it wasn’t just the camera. He had suggested I invite my boyfriend over while they were gone, which made no sense. He had always made it clear that he didn’t want my boyfriend in the house when no one was home because he didn’t want us messing around in his house. Now I was questioning everything.
He had said questionable things over the years, and I had always brushed them off because he was my dad. I never wanted to think he would do something inappropriate or harmful. And now I had this device staring at my bed. I was devastated.
My mind was racing with the consequences this could have on our family. My mom had my five-year-old half brother with him. I had no idea how to even bring this up to her. I confided in my aunt and uncle, who live close by.
They were supportive and encouraged me to talk to my mom, but they didn’t understand the weight of it the way I did. I posted on Reddit, asking for help. How do I tell her without causing extreme damage to the family? Even though that might be impossible.
People were blunt. This was no mistake. I needed to gather evidence. They asked if I had checked the bathrooms for more cameras, since these things rarely come in singles.
Some warned me to mentally prepare for my mom not to support me. I went to the police station that night and filed a report. I turned in the spy camera with the SD card. The officer told me this was a serious offense, and I would likely get a call from an investigator early next week.
The next morning, my boyfriend and I went back to my house to search for more cameras. I checked the bathrooms and my brothers’ rooms. I hesitated to go through my parents’ room, because I suspected he might have a hidden camera in there watching me search. My aunt came with me to help.
The day came to tell my mom. I had a plan. I would speak to her in a separate location from my stepdad, with my aunt present. I had footage of him deliberately setting up the camera and angling it, plus footage of me in my own room.
I was hoping she would understand why I went to my aunt first, since I worried for her safety if I told her while she was stuck with him four hours away. I prepared myself for her to go through the same denial I had. But with the evidence, there was no way she could deny it. I told myself that.
The conversation happened. I don’t know what exactly changed after that, but a few days later I posted an update. My stepdad got to my mom before I was able to. He had been checking the cameras while they were camping, realized what I found, and immediately went into blame-the-victim mode.
He told her I was being secretive, that I had my boyfriend over when he supposedly strictly said he couldn’t be over. But that was a lie. He had given me permission before he left. My mom ignored me for an entire week while my world crashed around me.
No calls to check if I was okay. No text to see how I was doing mentally. When I tried to continue with the police report, she held my college fund over my head, threatening to take it away unless I dropped everything. So I dropped it.
I regret that every day. I packed my things and stayed with a relative. My mom never asked how I was doing. She still avoids the conversation to this day.
She goes to church now and prays that I heal and come back around. My boyfriend and I tried to heal. We moved in together. I graduated nursing school and started a new job.
We made plans for a trip. We spent a lot of time with my aunt and uncle, who carried us through the whole thing. But the wound was still there. A year later, I can finally talk about it.
Here is the truth of what happened. My stepdad recorded us being intimate. The camera streamed directly to his phone. My mom chose him over the evidence.
My brothers, who are still minors and were supposedly at risk, were also brainwashed. They support him. Everyone in the family accepts him and doesn’t see an issue with it. I am no contact with my stepdad and low contact with my mom.
I keep minor contact with my brothers, but it is severely limited, and it hurts not to see them like I used to. That isn’t my choice. I’ve come to accept it. I’m engaged now.
My mom doesn’t know she won’t be invited to my wedding. My fiancé and I are planning to move across the country to cut contact with them entirely. If I could go back, I would have followed through with the police report and pressed charges. But I was scared and naive back then.
I’m not anymore. I trust a lot less and protect my peace a little more now. The investigation never brought my family justice.
But it taught me exactly who they were.
