The unexpected clash unfolded on Friday night at the La Centre Banquet Facility in Westlake, just 14 miles from Cleveland, as tensions boiled over among attendees with a history of animosity.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as four brothers reportedly stormed the reception, launching an attack on unsuspecting guests. “We were dancing and then suddenly, they jumped on us,” one victim recounted to authorities, as captured in footage shared by local news outlets.
The celebratory atmosphere quickly shifted to one of fear when Raed Mahmoud Sulaiman, one of the alleged attackers, grabbed a butter knife from a table setting and threatened others with it. As the music blared, chaos ensued, with attendees desperately trying to escape the escalating violence.
Westlake Police Captain Jerry Vogel confirmed that independent witnesses had already reported injuries, stating, “We knew violence had already occurred, as people were bloody.” In the midst of the turmoil, one brave guest hurled a chair at Sulaiman in an attempt to protect fellow party-goers.
As police arrived, they were met with a scene of confusion, with at least 40 guests fleeing the hall and spilling into the parking lot. The aftermath revealed that the altercation involved two families known for their longstanding tensions, though it remained unclear whether they were related or if this was simply a case of unresolved grievances resurfacing at an inopportune moment.
“People who don’t usually come together and have issues did so for this wedding,” Vogel noted. “When they gathered, old conflicts reignited.”
Sulaiman, 46, was taken into custody and faces charges including assault and inducing panic. Reports indicate he disposed of the butter knife before police arrived. Two other men, identified as Ali Wahdan, 47, and Abdallah Wahdan, 48, were also charged for their involvement, with allegations ranging from violating a protective order to making threats against guests.
