Jessica Bowie, 35, was described by her former roommates as a source of terror during her time in their Albany apartment, where her alarming behavior escalated to violent threats.
Bowie’s unsettling reign began in January and continued until she was evicted in July for failing to pay rent. Tensions reached a boiling point over a disagreement about trash, culminating in Bowie threatening Thomas’s life. Each time, the police arrived but were unable to confront Bowie, who refused to leave her room.
In addition to her alarming threats, Thomas also expressed concern for Bowie’s 11-year-old son, who she alleged was allowed to smoke marijuana during visits. Attempts to involve child protective services were met with silence, leaving Thomas feeling helpless.
As the conflict intensified, the landlord offered Bowie a chance to relocate to another apartment with fellow Muslims, but those tenants reportedly refused to live with her due to her volatile behavior. “When does a mosque turn people away?” Thomas questioned, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Brennan, who had known Bowie before her conversion to Islam, described her as a talented artist and devoted mother. However, she was blindsided by Bowie’s transformation, especially as Bowie began wearing a full niqab at home, limiting their interactions. The unsettling revelation of Bowie’s identity came just before her eviction, when she allegedly referred to Brennan by her previous name, triggering a moment of recognition.
Following her eviction, Bowie left behind a chaotic scene, including a book titled “Artificial Terrorists and Muslim Entrapment After 9/11,” with disturbing alterations made to its cover. The FBI later seized many of her belongings after her arrest on August 19, where she was charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.
Court documents indicate that Bowie had allegedly been in communication with an individual she believed to be an ISIS recruiter, pledging her allegiance to the group. Reports suggest she even purchased bomb-making materials from a local Home Depot, planning to execute her attack with the help of informants.
