Jennifer Lawrence is embracing a stripped-down look, and she looks fantastic.

Jennifer Lawrence has not, historically, been a minimalist dresser. Her relationship with Dior has seen her wardrobe shift in line with the creative fancies of the atelier, take in the bold messaging of creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, and fall prey to famous fashion emergencies. The Hunger Games star’s style has, however, slowly been shifting thanks, in part, down to her friendship with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and a mild addiction to anything labelled The Row.

Since Lawrence’s first Zipped Boot 1s – a rite of passage for any Olsen stan – wildly luxurious, painstakingly considered basics have been stealthily pushing out the floral dresses, jelly shoes and dungarees that were once hallmarks of Lawrence’s downtime looks. The press tour for No Hard Feelings – her first project since returning from maternity leave – saw her lean into loucher silhouettes on the red carpet and double down on the monochrome palette she clearly feels most like herself in.

At the Golden Globes, this transformation into a woman who loves clean lines, great tailoring and less-is-more styling was complete. Wearing an inky velvet Dior gown with subtle Grecian drapery at the back, she looked stop-in-your-tracks good. Yet it was so simple! With her mermaid hair swept to one side to reveal a Tiffany & Co. ear cuff and another frosting of diamonds around her neck, Lawrence made a move towards classic movie star glamour – chiming with the Old Hollywood mood channelled by Jennifer Aniston, Dua Lipa and Kylie Jenner at the kick-off event of awards season 2024.

A pop of red looks that much the brighter when it comes from The Row.

Proof that Lawrence is not just following the crowd came at the after-party, where the 33-year-old wore an ochre velvet Proenza Schouler gown with another backless twist. Its burnt hue signalled a fashion plate who feels confident in colour (she’s been flexing her skill at the “pop of red” colour trend too), but its silhouette was slinky, a touch fluid, even. A far cry from the blockbuster silver screen star who threw herself into the world of heavily embellished couture with gusto.

Crisp white shirting has become a wardrobe MVP both on and off the red carpet.

The chances of Lawrence treading the rest of the awards season trail are perhaps slim owing to the critics’ perception of No Hard Feelings, which is a crying shame given how the structure of press junkets and premieres appears to have prompted Jennifer to consolidate her style and work out what she wants to say in her next chapter. The Dior partnership, in particular, never looked chicer.
