Everyone involved is likely to feel a mix of amazement, curiosity, and humor. When it comes to Chanel presentations in Miami, St. Tropez, or Dubai, the wealthy fandom is accustomed to taking flight in private aircraft. Being in the “First” Class Lounge at Euston Station, waiting for a crowded and delayed train to Manchester Piccadilly, was an entirely new and exotic experience.

In general, the phrases “low-key” are beyond the comprehension of high-spending, Chanel-clad customers. Guests swished past the coffee-stained counters to these strange devices known as ticket barriers, accompanied by enormous quilted bags adorned with the renowned CCs and shaggy  Chanel moon boots.

Even though Manchester’s football clubs bring in a lot of money, the city’s seedier side has been the subject of many memes, such as “Will  Chanel wine and dine the billionaires at Greggs?” and “Is Kim Kardashian doing karaoke at The Millstone?” (a traditional pub in Manchester’s northern quarter). “How can we ruin the show?”

This is the answer: Kim Kardashian is not currently serving as an ambassador for Chanel. Even while some American journalists were dying to visit the world’s largest flagship store in Manchester, Greggs is not officially on the menu. Another high point was Wednesday’s match at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Free cartons of PG Tips and Man U strips with Number 5 (after a certain perfume) on the back were found in hotel rooms among the typical  Chanel amenities that the brand gives out.

As for the catwalk, it would have been possible to get a bird’s-eye perspective from one of the apartments above the Thomas Street shops and cafes. By erecting a glass awning over the whole street and supplying its own caterers to a few food emporia,  Chanel effectively took over the entire block.

Hugh Grant socialized with Kristen Stewart, Sofia Coppola, Alexa Chung, and Jobe Ferguson before the event began at the posh Bay Horse Tavern, where Ferguson co-founded. “It’s been amazing working with Chanel on this,” he says. The city’s glorious rain has caused an inevitable scarcity of umbrellas.

Nowadays, when companies go global with their events, they have a responsibility to make a positive impact on the local community and economy. Manchester Modern: Past, Future, and Present is a free exhibition that  Chanel sponsored. It was fully booked.

Peter Saville, a graphic designer and co-founder of Manchester’s Factory Records, designed many album covers for the label. Jeanette Winterson, poet John Cooper Clarke, and other Manchester-based celebrities were involved in the eight-month planning process of the Manchester/Chanel takeover.
