Hollywood star Henry Cavill’s childhood home in Jersey which was occupied by the Germans in the Second World War is on the market for £3.8m

The childhood home of Superman actor Henry Cavill – which was occupied by German forces during the Second World War – has gone on the market for £3.8 million.

The imposing seven-bedroom L’Ecluse mansion sits above Vallee des Vaux on Jersey where Cavill, 33, spent his formative years before becoming the latest Hollywood star to don the famous cape.

The Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice star left L’Ecluse, which translates from French as ‘The Lock’, as a youngster to make the move to the prestigious Stowe School in Stowe, Bucks.

Cavill honed his acting talents before moving to Kensington, west London, where he lives when he is not filming his latest blockbuster.

Now the huge property, which is believed to have been built back in 1870 as a farm, is on the market with luxury estate agents Fine & Country.

The house has a rich history outside of the silver screen and was occupied by the Germans in the Second World War where it was used as an officer’s mess and ammunition store.

Located in seven vergeés of land – the Jersey land measurement, equivalent to approximately three acres – the home was extensively renovated in 2006 and was subject to a complete redesign that left it finished to a very high standard, mixing contemporary materials and glass to maximum effect.

Dormer windows were added to the house in the early part of the 20th century and later a tower was also erected with a stairwell that led up to a roof garden.

In 1935, then-owner Dr Philip Bentlif commissioned well-known local architect, Arthur Grayson to design improved features on the home, which was then known as Beau Rivage.

Among the six floors, there is a contained bedsit apartment at ground level that has internal access to the main house.

In the main house itself, the first floor offers a hub for family life with a spacious open plan room encompassing sitting and dining areas and a luxurious Mark Wilkinson New England kitchen with an island and granite and marble-topped surfaces.

There is a cabinet ‘island’ with surrounding and granite surfaces topped with marble.

The fully-stocked kitchen also features a fitted double sink, a fridge-freezer and two dishwashers.

In the adjoining sitting area, the highlight feature is an eye-catching wood-burning stove that the owners sourced from Chelsea to create the ideal cosy atmosphere.

If that is not enough to brave the Jersey winters, there is also an oil-fired underfloor heating laid under the sandstone flooring as well as central heating linked to traditional cast-iron radiators situated throughout the house.

The second floor drawing room offers more entertaining space with its authentic original 1920 parquet flooring and feature fireplace.

Natural light invades the room thanks to glazed windows on three sides and the glass door that leads on to a wrap-around balcony.

The master bedroom can also access the balcony and offers a fully-fitted dressing room and adjoining bathroom with featuring an elevated, free-standing bath and walk-in shower.

There is also another room on the second floor that is current used as a music room but could be equally as effictive as a study, nursery or even another bedroom.

Work by the current owners saw the upper section of the tower turned into a guest suite with an adjoining bathroom. On the top floor, there are two further bedrooms with en-suite shower rooms and two bedrooms served by a house bathroom.

Extensive landscape gardening provided plenty of space for children to play on the grounds, which feature a wide variety of plant and wildlife.

A decked terrace offers outstanding views that overlook the valley opposite the house, while most rooms in the property offer similar picturesque sights.

The outstanding views extending right across the valley can be appreciated from most rooms and the decked terrace areas

A detached lock keeper’s cottage was built on the grounds to allow the employee responsible for controlling water flow to nearby Harvest Barn mill but was demolished in the 1990s.

Vicky Gurd, Director at Fine & Country Jersey, said: ‘L’Ecluse is a pleasure to be selling as it is a beautiful house set amongst the tree tops with great privacy and lots of natural light.

‘The present owners have renovated it extensively and have created an elegant yet modern and comfortable family home with lots of character.

‘The gardens are a delight, a brilliant adventure playground for children, there are hundreds of trees to climb, a pond and stream not to mention a great variety of wildlife.’
