“Congratulations, our relationship is now over. ”
I left that note on the kitchen counter after loading a moving truck with everything I cared about while Jack was at work. The apartment was half-empty when he came home. The bed was mine, so I took that too.

I don’t know if I’ll ever have the courage to tell him this to his face, but I do know one thing: I finally chose myself, and it’s the most freeing thing I’ve felt in years. Let me explain how I got here. I met Jack almost three years ago. We had everything in common—the same hobbies, a big group of friends, a love for travel, and we went on trips often.
His family adored me, and I adored them. From the outside, we were the perfect couple. But there was a problem from the very beginning, and it was always about one thing: oral sex. Jack made it clear from day one that he was very into it.
That alone wasn’t an issue. The issue was that no matter how often I tried, it was never enough, and it was never good enough. Two or three times when he was drunk, he’d compare me to his ex of four years, a woman named Sarah, who he said had been amazing at it. He always apologized the next day, telling me he didn’t mean it.
But it hurt. It hurt a lot. To make matters worse, Jack and Sarah were still friends. They didn’t see each other often, but they talked on the phone sometimes.
They shared two dogs that now belonged to her, and he still checked in on them. Last summer, I made a mistake. I snooped through his computer. I know that was wrong, and I admit it.
But what I found broke me. There were videos of Jack and Sarah together, and they were shot shortly before our relationship began. Their relationship had ended more than a year before that, but these videos were new enough to hurt like a knife to the chest. I cried for hours.
I couldn’t look at him. I already felt insecure about the whole thing, and seeing them together like that made it impossible to move past it. When I told him what I found, he said that’s what I get for snooping. We had a rough time after that.
I couldn’t give or receive oral without those images flooding back into my head. I’d start crying again. I told him I needed time, but he kept pushing. Months went by.
He asked me every single day when I’d be ready again. Even though we were having regular sex two to three times a week, that one thing was all he seemed to care about. And every time he drank, he’d bring up Sarah again. It just hurt so much.
Eventually, I decided to force myself through it. We started having oral again a few weeks ago, but it always ended the same way: me in the bathroom, crying silently, trying to hold myself together. And Jack wasn’t happy either. He said it felt forced, like I wasn’t into it.
Last week, he told me he had a solution. He wanted to have oral sex with other women so that I wouldn’t have to give him bad blowjobs anymore. My stomach turned. Just the thought of him being with other women made me physically sick.
But I also didn’t want the relationship to end. I actually considered it. I thought maybe if we set some rules, like not Sarah, it could work. Maybe I was being unreasonable.
Maybe I wasn’t in a position to say no since I couldn’t give him what he wanted. I was so lost that I posted my story online, asking for advice from strangers. I couldn’t talk to my family or friends because I knew they’d tell me to leave him. And I wasn’t ready to hear that.
The internet was blunt. They told me he was a prick, that he didn’t care about or respect me. They pointed out that I asked him countless times what I could do better, and he never once had an answer. He just said things like, “How should I know how this works?
” or “I’ve never had to explain it before. ”
Someone asked me what I would tell my daughter if she were in my situation. I immediately thought, “Run. Run fast.
” And that’s when I knew I was lying to myself. Then something even more disturbing came to light. I found a post that might have been written by Jack about half a year ago. In it, he described a relationship just like ours, but from his perspective.
He said his girlfriend of two years wasn’t the best at giving head. He said he tried to give her tips, but she didn’t improve. He said an ex sent him pictures and GIFs of their sex life out of the blue, and that his girlfriend went crazy when she found them. He gave the whole situation a sweet makeover, making himself sound patient and innocent.
But there were parts that hit too close to home. I noticed he’d changed some details—like claiming he deleted the messages but forgot about the videos, when really I hadn’t found any messages, just videos. And he made it seem like his ex had reached out suddenly, when in reality, they’d been in contact all along. The way certain letters were capitalized matched his phone’s autocorrect perfectly.
And then came the part that crushed me: in that post, he talked about breaking up with me. While I was still crying myself to sleep over what I’d seen, he was already thinking about ending things because he didn’t want to miss out on blowjobs. That was the final straw. The sadness and confusion turned to anger.
And anger was exactly what I needed. I spent two nights at my sister’s house. I told her everything. She was shocked, disgusted, and furious.
We talked for hours, and for the first time, I felt like I could breathe. When I came back, I decided it was over. The apartment was in Jack’s name, but I always gave him my half of the rent. I hired a moving truck, packed up all my important things while he was at work, and left without looking back.
He called me nonstop all day. Some messages said he missed me and loved me. Others said it was over and that he’d been cheating on me for the past year. I don’t know if that’s true.
But I did smile when I thought about him coming home to a half-empty apartment, the bed already gone. I’m staying at my sister’s place for now, looking for a new apartment. I’m still sad. I’m still angry.
But I’m also free.
