The night of Will’s wedding, my phone buzzed with a message from him. I opened it expecting something sweet about the ceremony, maybe a photo of the cake. Instead, I read words that made me feel like I’d been punched in the gut. He told me he had always loved me.

He said he’d only married Sarah to make me realize my feelings for him, to make me fight for him. He said he didn’t love her, didn’t want to be with her, and that he’d leave her for me if I asked. I stared at the screen, my hand shaking. Will and I had grown up together—literally together.

Our mothers are best friends, and we were raised as one big family in the same house, sharing parenting duties. He was my brother in every way that mattered. This felt like incest. I signed out of everything and cried until I couldn’t breathe.

When I finally logged back in, the messages just kept coming. He begged me to run away with him. Then he switched to blaming me for leading him on, which made no sense. I’d never flirted with him.

I treated him exactly like I treated my biological brothers. I didn’t know what to do. Sarah, his new wife, was someone I genuinely loved. She was about to become my sister.

And now Will was telling me, on their honeymoon, that she was just a pawn in his plan to get my attention. He even admitted that he’d always see me as the “other woman,” and because of me, he’d never be able to fully love her. I felt sick. I felt anger, betrayal, and a deep, ugly sadness.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Sarah, whose heart was about to be shattered by a man who had just promised her forever. I knew she needed to know, but I also knew that telling her would blow up both our families. I posted on Reddit, asking for advice, because I had no one in my life who wasn’t connected to this mess. The comments were surprisingly supportive.

People told me to send him one clear message—that I never had and never would see him romantically—and then go no contact. A few even suggested telling our parents before things spiraled further. Three days later, my mom noticed I wasn’t myself. She pried it out of me, and I showed her the messages.

She called my dad and Will’s dad for an emergency meeting, and I broke down telling them everything. To my surprise, they rallied around me. They agreed that something had gone terribly wrong, and we all felt the same way I did—that what Will was doing was incestuous. We started researching therapists, and the next day, I had my first appointment.

We decided to keep it all between the parents and me until Will and Sarah got back from their honeymoon. The night they returned, we had a huge family dinner with Sarah’s family too. I spent the whole night trying to avoid Will, which he found odd. He cornered me in the garden, asking what was wrong.

“You know why,” I said, trying to walk away. He grabbed my arm, confused. I finally broke down and told him I could never, ever feel the way he felt about me. He looked genuinely confused.

He had no idea what I was talking about. His phone had gone missing during their trip, and he hadn’t cared because he was excited about the destination honeymoon. I told him everything. He threw up in the koi pond.

Then he hugged me, and we stood there for what felt like forever. He told me he understood why I’d reacted the way I did—that anyone would think that way if their brother suddenly confessed feelings for them. He said he’d never hold my hurt reaction against me. Our moms came out, saw us together, and immediately sprang to my defense, thinking he was cornering me.

They calmed down when we explained. Will’s mom charged inside and tore Sarah a new one. It came out that Sarah had always been jealous of me. She absolutely hated me.

Her goal had been to either get me to admit I had feelings for Will so he’d cut me off, or to get me to cut him off. She was the one who had sent those messages, pretending to be him, to drive us apart. And it also came out that Sarah had never been faithful. She’d cheated on Will regularly throughout their relationship.

He filed for divorce. Thanks to his prenuptial agreement, she left with nothing she hadn’t brought into the marriage, and the divorce only cost him around six hundred dollars. I’m helping him pay for it, and he’s moved back in. We’re looking for a place together as roommates now.

He’s in therapy too, dealing with everything. Our bond—mine and Will’s—is deeper than ever. He was heartbroken, but he dodged a bullet, even if it was late. I’m still so angry at Sarah.

She could have just talked to me. I would have listened. But I guess she was always a cheater. I don’t even know what to think anymore.

It’s a happy update, I guess. My world didn’t collapse. I held on to my brother, my best friend, and our weird little family.

And that’s what matters most.
