Gunfire erupted in an open courtyard at a Jersey City public housing complex in broad daylight Wednesday afternoon, sending residents diving for cover and prompting a blistering online warning from a Blood-affiliated rapper with deep roots in the neighborhood.
The shooting at Maran Gardens unfolded at approximately 5 p. m. , when three gunmen entered the complex on a scooter and opened fire in a space where families regularly gather.
Jersey City officials confirmed the incident, and several residents described harrowing moments of confusion and fear as shots rang out back to back.
“I was in the house when I actually heard, you know, something. At first, I thought it was fireworks, but then I said, ‘Nah, that don’t sound like fireworks going back to back,'” one resident told News12 New Jersey’s Christine Quley. Another woman described sitting on a bench in the courtyard when the shooting started.
“It was about 5:00. We were sitting here on the bench and we start hearing shots. I ran to my building to the third floor.
I didn’t come out till the police came.”
The attack has left residents demanding answers and a renewed law enforcement presence in their community. According to Jersey City Councilman Tom Zupa, Maran Gardens once had dedicated police officers assigned to the complex five days a week. However, Zupa said Jersey City Public Safety recently made the decision to pull all officers from housing posts and reassign them to general patrol, leaving the housing complex’s substation empty.
“What I’m advocating for is the reinstatement of the housing authority police for this neighborhood,” Zupa said. “I know our resources are thin, but when we talk priorities, having them here is essential.” Residents agreed, arguing that the removal of officers from the complex left them vulnerable and made the shooting preventable.
“Having the police on site makes a big difference. It makes people feel a little more safer,” one resident said.
Another resident pointed directly at the entry point used by the attackers. “Dale’s Avenue where the perpetrators came through. There would be police officers in a car parked right outside,” the resident said.
A third added: “It happened in broad daylight. Before we used to have the cops here and you know, they wouldn’t dare come down and do that that time of day.”
But the shooting has a volatile second layer, because Maran Gardens is known as the home base of rapper Albee Al, a Bloods affiliate with ties to rapper Jim Jones. In a video circulated by the hip-hop news outlet Garrison News, Albee Al delivered a furious, profanity-laced message aimed at the young shooters and the older figures he believes are responsible for them. He began by explaining that he does not normally address matters online, but felt he had no other way to reach the offenders.
“The last thing I want to do is come to the internet and address this, ’cause I ain’t no internet type,” he said in the video. “But it seems like it’s the only way I could get you youngins to hear what’s going on.” He said the violence inside his own neighborhood was personal: “That happened in my hood.
We ain’t going for it. Innocent people getting hit. Innocent people out there.
Kids out there. Elderly people out there.”
Albee Al acknowledged that he has spent recent years attempting to steer his life in a different direction, promoting peace and encouraging younger residents to avoid the criminal lifestyle that has ensnared so many. “I’ll be pushing peace. Trying to change my ways.
Trying to push my youngins a different way as well,” he said. “Some follow, some don’t. You know, it take discipline.”
But he made clear that his commitment to peace has a hard limit: “But kids get hit, anything like that, that peace [expletive] go out the window. I don’t give about no police. I don’t none of that.”
The rapper also stressed that he has consciously avoided flooding his own community with drugs and violence, despite having the means and connections to do so. “I could have been did some wild [expletive], flooded the hood, did all type of [expletive],” he said. “But I’m showing a different route.
Because we already know what’s going on with these RICO cases.” His reference to federal racketeering charges appeared intended to demonstrate that he understands the stakes of returning to active criminal involvement.
Albee Al then turned his attention to the older figures in the community who he says are failing to supervise the younger generation. “Your old heads, whoever y’all listening to, your big homies ain’t got nothing, or what none of this, they not strong enough. They money not strong enough.
None of that,” he warned. “So y’all better rethink your movements. I’m telling y’all, I’m begging y’all, ’cause y’all going to make me put my jersey back on, bro, get back in the game.”
The most chilling part of his message was reserved for the possibility that a child or an elderly person could be harmed in a future shooting. “Let one of them kids get hit. Let an elderly person down my hood get hit.
Watch what happened, bro. It ain’t going to be safe for nobody,” he said, adding that his willingness to post the warning publicly should be taken as proof of his sincerity. “Me being on the internet doing this, that mean I really don’t give a [expletive] if it get to that point.
And that’s my word.”
The video has spread rapidly across social media, intensifying concerns that the shooting could trigger retaliatory violence in a community already on edge. Law enforcement officials have not publicly addressed Albee Al’s remarks, and it remains unclear whether investigators are treating Wednesday’s attack as gang-related or whether any arrests are imminent.
Councilman Zupa, meanwhile, is expected to press for the restoration of a dedicated police substation at Maran Gardens during the next city council meeting. Residents have vowed to attend and make their voices heard, arguing that the reassignment of housing officers has endangered their families and that they cannot wait for another tragedy to force change.
In the meantime, the courtyard at the center of the chaos has fallen quiet. The benches where residents sat moments before the gunfire now stand empty, and parents are keeping children indoors. The shooting has left an entire community in a state of anxious uncertainty, caught between the threat of further gun violence and the rapper’s grim promise to respond if the peace is broken again.
