In Jon M. Chu’s upcoming two-part film adaptation of Broadway’s hit 2004 musical, Ariana, is seen in an all pink ensemble as Cynthia’s character Elphaba Thropp, The Wicked Witch Of The West is introduced.
The trailer unfolds to Defying Gravity, the musical’s signature hit song, with Elphaba’s arrival sparking concern from Glinda, who notices that she ‘is green.’
Elphaba is a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power while Glinda is a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.

Wicked follows an unlikely friendship, which emerges between Elphaba and Glinda, two clashing witches in the magical land of Oz.
In the opening shot, Jeff Goldblum who plays the Wizard of Oz, is heard saying: ‘The best way to bring folks together is to give them a real good enemy.’
Elphaba then tells Glinda: ‘Something just takes over me and when it does bad things happen.’
Glinda comforts Elphaba saying: ‘Don’t be afraid.’
‘I’m not afraid,’ she responds, ‘It’s the wizard who should be afraid of me.’
Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the film, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths.
Glinda’s unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba’s determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future.
Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Notably, it was during filming when Grande met her now boyfriend Ethan, 31.
This trailer comes out after Ariana’s emotional post about wrapping Wicked, where she met her boyfriend Ethan Slater.
Ethan plays Boq, a resident of Munchkinland, in the upcoming film based on Gregory Maguire’s best selling novel and the hit Broadway musical adaptation.
‘I will never forget even a minute of my year(s) with [Glinda],’ Ariana wrote on her Instagram Story. ‘Or you. or my Cyn. Permanently and preferably intertwined.’
She continued: ‘I am so inexplicably thankful that we got to add so many soggy eyelashes to the collection.’
The film’s director, Jon M. Chu, received a shout out as well.

Ariana found herself under public scrutiny in July when rumors circulated about her dating her Wicked costar Ethan, just days after news of her breakup with Dalton emerged.
To add to the eyebrow-raising, Ethan had recently ended his marriage with Lilly Jay, his high school sweetheart.
They had welcomed their first baby together in August 2022, and he filed for divorce from her in July 2023.
‘Thank you, Jon, for leading the way with such compassion, openness, brilliance and kindness,’ she concluded. ‘I have never seen someone conduct a space the way you do. I love you so much.’
