Zendaya’s Chani is a tribal fighter who in Part One is a siren from Paul’s dreams but who is now his comrade in an armed struggle of resistance.

Paul has united with Chani’s desert tribe in their mutual battle against the imperial regime that oppressed her people and killed his father Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac).

Over the course of the storyline, what starts off as an uneasy alliance between Paul and the tribe becomes a joint heroic uprising.

At the start of the trailer, Chani is attempting to help Paul cope with disturbing dreams give him hazy, incoherent glimpses of the future.

‘It’s been awhile since you’ve had one of those nightmares,’ Chani worries, as Paul notes that he is only receiving ‘fragments’ of information and ‘nothing’s clear.’

Paul is far from his wealthy, verdant planet of Caladan and is training with Chani’s tribe in their hostile desert climate of Arrakis.

Despite its forbidding appearance and the threat posed by the colossal worms that wreak havoc through the landscape, Arrakis turns out to be a goldmine.

The planet is lusted after for its massive quantities of ‘spice,’ a substance that does double duty as fuel for interstellar travel and a hallucinogen.

Paul and Chani wrap their arms around each other and indulge in a passionate kiss as the winds blow the sand picturesquely around them

Paul, now on Arrakis, has joined forces with Chani’s people, the Fremen, led by a warrior called Stilgar (Javier Bardem), to rebel against the empire that rules them all.

Laying out the common ground he has with the Fremen, he says: ‘You’ve been fighting the Harkonnens for decades. My family’s been fighting them for centuries.’

‘Your blood comes from dukes and great houses,’ Chani says as they sit together in the desert. ‘Here, we’re equal. What we do, we do for the benefit of all.’

Paul turns on the charm and says: ‘Well, I’d very much like to be equal to you,’ to which Chani flirts back: ‘Maybe I’ll show you the way.’

The pair of them wrap their arms around each other and indulge in a passionate kiss as the winds blow the sand picturesquely around them.

As they prepare for their revolt, the romance between Paul and Chani flourishes – and he grapples with the burden of having prophetic visions.

Against the backdrop of his love affair, Paul is also being trained by Stilgar in the skills necessary to become a warrior in Arrakis’ brutal environment.

Meanwhile the Emperor (Christopher Walken) is arraying his own forces against the rebels – including the House Harkonnen, the old rivals of Paul’s family.

A stone-cold warrior with a fully shaved head and gleaming, predatory eyes, Feyd-Rautha promises to be a formidable enemy to Paul.

Feyd-Rautha is known for his fearsome skill in duels, shown in the trailer when he fights in an arena resembling the Colosseum.

He is also apparently notorious for his bloodlust, indicated in the trailer through the classic touch of having him lick a knife.

The two sides – the empire and the rebels – fling themselves into all-out war against teach other, fighting massive battles on a grand scale.

Supernatural creatures enter the equation, including colossal sandworms opening their cavernous maws as they burst from underground.

Throughout the spiraling conflict, the sizzling romance continues between the characters played by teen idols Timothee and Zendaya.

‘My allegiance is to you. Do you believe me?’ Paul asks Chani. ‘I want you to know, I will love you as long as I breathe.’

Chani, meanwhile, issues an equally romantic proclamation to her paramour: ‘You will never lose me as long as you stay who you are.’

The war also unfolds alongside some philosophical questions about the nature of prophecy and the capacity of people for free will.

Paul, with his dreams, says: ‘I see possible futures all at once, and in so  many futures our enemies prevail – but I do see a way. There is a narrow way through.’

The war also unfolds alongside some philosophical questions about the nature of prophecy and the capacity of people for free will

During another scene, however, Chani agitates against the idea of being bound by predetermined fate: ‘This prophecy is how they enslave us!’

Princess Irulan turns for guidance to the forbidding Gaius Helen Mohiam (Charlotte Rampling), who acts as Truthsayer to the Emperor.

‘This is a form of power that our world has not yet seen,’ the Truthsayer tells a frightened-looking Princess Irulan: ‘the ultimate power.’

Dune: Part Two, like its prequel, is directed by the acclaimed Denis Villeneuve whose films include Sicario, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

Frank Herbert’s original novel has become a sci-fi classic and was previously adapted in the 1980s by David Lynch, whose widely derided movie featured such stars as Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, José Ferrer, Brad Dourif and Sting.
