Chelsea recently made a $73 million attempt to acquire a “unplayable” forward, but it was turned down.

Chelsea have been unsuccessful with their first official attempt to sign Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres.

The Blues have been linked with several forwards already during the January transfer window, including Viktor Gyokeres.

Now, there’s speculation that claims Mauricio Pochettino’s side launched an attack to try bring Sporting’s talisman to Stamford Bridge.

Record claims that Portuguese giants Sporting rejected a proposal from Chelsea for Gyokeres in recent days.

It is explained that Chelsea have just submitted a bid worth around €85 million (£73m) for the in-form striker, but that was immediately rejected by the club.

The report explains that Sporting won’t dip below the player’s €100 million (£86m) release clause.

Apparently, the Blues could make a fresh offer before the close of this month’s transfer window.

Gyokeres has been in sensational form in Sporting colours this season, so Chelsea fans may enjoy hearing the club have made a serious attempt to try sign him recently.

The Swedish frontman has scored 20 goals and made 10 assists in only 24 Sporting appearances across all competitions, which is a phenomenal return during his first half a year in Lisbon.

It’s worth remembering he was only playing in England’s second division last season with Coventry City, too.

Described as “unplayable” by Maxime Biamou via X in 2022, Gyokeres is beginning to elevate himself to dizzy heights as he enters his peak years.

We’d still have reservations about the fact that he’s never scored Premier League goals before, but he’s a superb all-round No 9 with both great physicality and technique. It’s certainly the type of player that Pochettino’s Chelsea really lacks in their squad at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking via Fabrizio Romano’s X last month, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim claimed that Gyokeres will only leave his club if buyers pay the full release clause.

We’ll be very intrigued to see if Chelsea decide to cough up the extra £13 million to bring Gyokeres to West London in January.
