A mother accused of killing her own toddler allegedly had a chilling plan in motion that went beyond her son. Court documents now reveal she also intended to take her husband’s life, according to prosecutors.
Corie Walsh, 40, appeared in court Tuesday for a bail hearing, where authorities claimed she spoke about “poisoning [her husband] with a drink.” The Illinois mother is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 2-year-old son, Barrett.
Prosecutors said Walsh had multiple prescription bottles on hand at the time of the alleged plot. She also reportedly tried to harm herself after the killing, and was found fully clothed in a bathtub of bloody water with wounds to her wrists and thighs.
During the hearing, the court heard evidence that Walsh was so delusional she believed she had killed all three of her other children as well. Her defense attorney, Robert Kerr, argued she was in the midst of a “psychotic episode” and “severely mentally ill.”
Kerr told the judge doctors recommended “immediate” care to prevent Walsh from hurting herself. He requested she remain under medical supervision rather than being placed in jail.
The case gained attention after reports that Walsh had been obsessively following the Lindsay Clancy trial, even texting friends about it hours before the alleged murder. In one message, she wrote, “It was manslaughter, please I’m really freaking out.”
But during Tuesday’s hearing, Kerr pushed back hard against any connection. “Describing Corie to a copied Lindsay is to take an easy bait,” he said, calling such comparisons “sickening.”
According to court documents, Walsh believed that Clancy’s husband, not Clancy herself, had killed their children. That belief reportedly fueled her anxious messages to friends just before Barrett was found dead.
Walsh’s husband was not in court, but Kerr told the judge he remains “unwavering” in his support and love for her. He has cooperated fully with police and social workers.
As the legal process moves forward, one question lingers: what truly drove a mother to such a heartbreaking breaking point?
