Martin Scorsese is one of those directors who loves to see his actors improvise their roles. A large part of his movie scenes are improvised. Margot Robbie caught the attention of the director on the very first day of the audition when she devised her part.

According to the script, she was told to argue with the Titanic star. However, the actress took it one step further and hit Leonardo DiCaprio in the face. The room became dead silent as Robbie went on to scream “F*ck you!”. The actress told Harper’s Bazaar (via Collider) that she regretted her decision and thought it backfired.

However, the situation was exactly the opposite. Martin Scorsese was baffled by her performance. The director spoke to TIME that the Barbie star’s improvisation stunned everyone present and made it obvious that the role was made for her. She didn’t stop there and improvised several scenes from the movie as well.

Margot Robbie also volunteered to do several of the bold scenes in the movie. Despite Martin Scorsese’s advice to dilute the boldness, Robbie knew what was ideal for the role. The bold scenes do contribute to the movie and help it become a grand success.
